international / anti-war / imperialism Wednesday March 16, 2005 - 10:53 by Global Women's Strike, Ireland
This statement was sent by the Global Women’s Strike in Ireland to a demonstration and occupation at Rimini airport, Italy on Saturday, March 12th 2005 against the use of the airport for the refuelling of planes carrying US troops. There have been months of protests and the day before this occupation, it was announced that World Airways, the airline carrying the troops, was not going ahead with the plan to land in Rimini. An article in Il Manifesto on that day (‘Troppo Tensioni’, I Marines Non Atterrano by Cinzia Gubbini) says that when World Airways first contacted Aeradria on the 17 January, they let them know that they wanted to pull out of Shannon, Ireland and change the stopover to Rimini. ... read full story / add a comment

On the 11th of March, those Irish citizens of counties Meath and North Kildare were called to vote in a secret ballot, as is their right for living in a tippy toppy emergent democracy, regardless of Ethnic origin, Religious Creed, Social Economic class, or Gender.
( but only if they actually live there, and pay or don't pay tax there, as the tippy toppy emergent democracy of Eire doesn't afford its citizens postal votes.)

Tramore, Co. Waterford home to a three mile beach, sand dunes, back strand lagoon, wildlife sanctuary and landfill.

For years commercial and residential waste has been ‘legally’ dumped on the back of this beach. At high tide and times of flooding some of the waste ‘conveniently’ gets washed out to sea or washed onto the shore. There is also a great deal of leachate soaking into the water and surrounding soil and sand.

This environmental catastrophe has gone largely unnoticed in the past and has been successfully concealed from public knowledge. The plan is to raise public awareness and highlight this as in issue in a number of different stages.

For details on Stage 1 of the public awareness project go here http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=68947 ... read full story / add a comment

Anti-Nuclear Protesters from across the country are locked on to a 25 foot mock Trident nuclear Submarine outside the Scottish Parliament today. They are raising awareness of the UK’s obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to get rid of Trident. There are 17 people inside the submarine locked on including a member of the Scottish Parliament Rosie Kane MSP. They began their protest at 10.15 this morning. A number of MEPs have come outside the parliament building to show their support. There have been no arrests as yet although the protests will not move until their Trident submarine has been dismantled – symbolising the dismantling of the real Trident subs. ... read full story / add a comment

Abuse of human rights is serious. It sometimes happens when undemocratic regimes feel threated by freedom movements. It is happening in the so-called war on terror because democratic US is seeking to maintain its access to an undue share of the world’s limited energy resources. Ireland is facilitating this torture process, and the even worse large-scale killing of innocent people in Iraq, by facilitating the US military transit through Shannon and the transport of prisoners for torture. Ireland’s reasons for this complicity amount to the worst of all reasons, just money. ... read full story / add a comment
