Noam Chomsky has publicly given his backing to John Kerry for the US presidency. Chomsky, of course, prefers Nadar, but in an interview in the Guardian seems to advocate a vote for Kerry, presumbably because Nadar is not going to win and each vote for him is one less for Kerry, thus opening the way for a Bush victory. ... read full story / add a comment

might lead to massive violence on the streets of Palestine Ariel Sharon chose today to public assassinate him in Gaza without so much as a trial.

The question is why? And why was it sanctioned by Bush as it undoubtedly must have been?

They could have picked up this man any time they wanted on the streets as there was little chance of him getting away on his wheelchair. Surely this barbaric execution is proof if it were required that Israel has no interest in peace and is again thumbing its' nose at the world.

His assassination will reawaken memories for Irish people of the execution of James Connolly in a wheelchair and the war which led to independence from British tyranny that it sparked!

More than 200 people marched through Belfast's Royal Avenue this afternoon on the 1st Anniversary of the US led invasion of Iraq.

Speakers from the Firebrigades Union, the Belfast Islamic Centre, the representative of the Basque Community and Sinn Féin all called for the US lead coalition troops to withdraw from Iraq immediately and allow the people of Iraq to determine their own affairs.

Speakers accused Bush, Blair and other leaders of misleading and ignoring world opinion and destabilising Iraq, the Middle East and indeed the world.

An earlier protest in West Belfast highlighting recent killings, one by a Spanish police officer, in the Basque Country, held a solidarity feeder march to join the main anti war demo.

Other groups in attendance were the SWP, the SP, the CP, Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Ógra Shinn Féin, Belfast Anarchists, as well as many non alligned individuals. ... read full story / add a comment
