Anti-War Ireland – a broad-based and democratic alliance of independent anti-war groups – has called a demonstration at Shannon for Friday 25th June at 7pm. The demonstration is intended as an entirely peaceful and mass mobilisation in opposition to the visit of George W. Bush to Ireland, against the occupation of Iraq, against the militarisation of Shannon Airport, and against Irish government complicity in the criminal adventures of Bush and his cohorts. The protest is also in support of Mary Kelly and the Pitstop Ploughshares defendants. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Mercer Human Resources firm released their survey that places Tokyo as the world's most expensive city. Dublin gets the rank of 21st, a massive jump from being placed at 73 in the space of a year! Click on link and dwnld their pdf file that lists such. Thanks FF/PDs, we are all waiting for this trickle down effect, it would sure beat having four euro in change after paying the rent and getting the shopping. Mind you, being poor can give one the incentive to try new things, like home brewing and setting up an illegal shebeen. That is, if you can manage to fit all three customers into your average Dublin beds*it. ... read full story / add a comment

Indications are that there will be a considerable change in the make up of the city council in Galway. Outgoing were 5 FF, 4 PD, 4 FG, 2 Lab. Based on tallies, incoming looks like 3-4 Lab, 2 SF, 1 Green (maybe), 1 Ind, 2 FF, 3 PD, 2-3 FG. Tokie Laotan (see earlier report on racist harassment of this candidate) polled a respectable 311 votes —about half of what is needed for a seat ... read full story / add a comment

Police repression of homeless people was evident on Belfast’s Botanic Avenue tonight, & if that wasn’t enough Food Not Bombs were assaulted for objecting. Not long after we set up our stall (around 7pm) 3 police officers began hassling a young man for begging outside Botanic Train Station (around 20 metres away from us). After about 15-20 minutes the police arrested this man dragging him to their van with excessive force. Several people from FNB approached the police & objected to the manner in which they were treating this man. ... read full story / add a comment
