Jump To Comment: 1Many people have commented negatively on the wearing of fur by the current Pope in Rome. The previous pope, who sadly passed away in 2005, never wore fur on his outfit, nor did the two popes before him. However, recently the Pope has been seen wearing a fur hat and fur trimmed cape.
It has been claimed that the Pope may not be clearly aware of the realities of fur farming. As someone who recently called on the young people of the world to be environmentally conscious, he must realise that he is obviously sending out a powerful message to people that he thinks fur, and consequently animal pain and suffering is acceptable.
Many people involved in animal rights campigns in Ireland are from a Protrestant background, but nevertheless, the pope is a fighure of influence in Ireland so sooner or later the anti-fur groups should make a statement condemning the Pope if he continues to wear fur.
Otherwise the campiagn against fur wearing might be seen as being directed only against women.
The Italian Animal Rights group the Association for the Defence of Animals and the Environment (AIDAA), said on Monday:
"We just want to ask him in a message of love and peace to give a strong signal towards the protection of animals and the environment through a small but very significant personal sacrifice".
They have also recently launched an internet petition which they sincerely hope to present to the Pope next month.
