Statement by CPGB-ML, October 2011 - Immediate publication

Stop the War leaders are trying to stifle debate by illegally expelling those who criticise them -

On 23 September, the CPGB-ML received an email from the Stop the War Coalition informing us of a decision by the "officers group" to "reject the affiliation" of our party. We were told that this was on the basis that the CPGB-ML had been "publicly attacking Stop the War Coalition" in its publications.

We responded as follows:

No basis for expulsion

First: we have been affiliated for many years to the coalition. Therefore it is not now possible to reject our affiliation. If it can be proved that we have failed to comply with StW's constitution in some way, then we would have to be expelled. ... read full story / add a comment

Monday October 10th is World Mental Health Day* which aims to raise public awareness about mental health issues. The day promotes open discussion on mental health, and investments in prevention, promotion and services.

This year the theme is "investing in mental health" and according to Manus Hanratty, the new CEO of the SpunOut.ie National Youth Organisation, Ireland needs to wake up and take action to address the youth mental health crisis facing our country.

Ireland has the youngest population in Europe with 40% under 25 and according to Manus Hanratty there is an urgent need to invest in the younger generation if we are to build a sustainable, inclusive and happy society.

Recently in the picturesque village of Ballynagore, Co Westmeath, the local Council at a cost of €40,000 took the decision to demolish 3 bungalows that where close to being fully constructed, in what is now purported to be the demolition of Ireland's first 'ghost estate.'

The 3 bungalows had been left lying idle for quite some time and while there is confusion as to who the developer is, the neglected homes had quickly fallen victim to vandalism and had become somewhat of an eyesore to the residents of Ballynagore. ... read full story / add a comment

One of the main criticisms of the status quo in Iran is the relegation of women to second-class citizens, something which had been explored by Iranian filmmakers repeatedly in the previous years. Many of these filmmakers were involved in the Green Wave, and this season attempts to select work which represents both these artists and their concerns on the rights of women in contemporary Iran. As the regime cracked down on protesters, the punishments imposed on many of the names mentioned in these notes make for chilling reading: Pegah Ahangarani and Mahnaz Mohammadi, repeatedly arrested and imprisoned, currently on release; Mohammad Rasoulof, imprisoned for six years; and most cruelly, Jafar Panahi, imprisoned for six years, and prohibited from filmmaking for 20. ... read full story / add a comment
