Even after 40 years we can still be taken by surprise. No one anticipated the scenes in Dublin on Saturday afternoon. Even the Gardai, who turned up with riot shields, were wrong-footed by the ferocity and scale of the disturbances. Most of us expected a lacklustre imitation of an Orange parade trundling its way along O'Connell Street, followed by loyal sons piling onto buses to make their way home. No fuss. No impact. No point. ... read full story / add a comment

In the report linked to below, it describes how the acidity of the oceans has increased because the rate of carbon dixoide absorption has shot up. Many marine creatures such as corals and sea-shells of all kinds have carbonate shells which are sensitive to the acidity (or pH level) of the water and means they may start dissolving. This would have enormous repercussions for the entire oceanic ecosystems. ... read full story / add a comment

Pauline Hanson recently announced on news radio that her political views have been “vindicated”; she cited the overt racist attitudes of John Howard and Peter Costello as proof of her claim. Who could deny it? Hanson’s imprisonment on trumped-up charges was an act of political assassination instigated by Howard but executed by his then errand boy, Tony Abbott. Hanson’s trial and subsequent imprisonment effectively eliminated her and her party from the Australian political landscape; mainstream racist ideology was re-established in its rightful home, the white Australian conservative ultra-right Liberal Party of Howard! The world watches Australia take a giant leap backwards as Howard continues to divide the nation. ... read full story / add a comment

The famous Shiite Askariyah shrine (Golden Mosque) in Iraq has been targeted and destroyed but by whom remains unclear at this stage. Regardless of the intentions of those responsible, one dramatic (and historically consistent) point cuts through the hysteria and mayhem. That of the importance (or otherwise) of sites that are deemed sacred or holy and the 'location' of this attribution in human consciousness and/or human societies/groups. Social history records naturally occurring phenomena, rocks, rivers etc; structures built by men, temples, obelisks etc; cyclic astronomical phenomena, eclipses, comets etc, all of which have been attributed by humans with special significance at one time or another, whereas none of these produced or naturally occurring phenomenon are ‘holy’ or ‘sacred’. ... read full story / add a comment

A recent study from the US that shows that between 1966 and 2001 only the richest 10 percent enjoyed a growth rate in their real wages and salaries that was equal to or above the average rate of growth in productivity. Working Class Resistance #11, quarterly magazine of Organise! is now on sale (price £2 or 3 euros). This new 32 page edition includes articles on the following: Irish Ferries, thousands of workers said no to slave labour on the high seas but was the best deal done? 3 SIPTU members occupied two Irish Ferries boats in opposition to the company’s attempt to reflag its ships, replace 543 crew with agency workers from Eastern Europe, and impose orse terms and conditions on those remaining. The scale of solidarity has not been seen in decades - but the deal SIPTU signed up to has fallen far short of the hopes of those involved in this struggle. A look at the dispute and the ‘deal’. Arab fighters and insurgents have demonstrated to the world that the US is a ‘superpower’ in name only. A poorly armed and trained but highly motivated and dedicated band of fighters has exposed the US military as weak, inept, unskilled, brutal and bereft. From South America to the Himalayas, resistance against capitalist plunder and exploitation signals the inevitable failure of militaristic capitalism. Regardless of all other considerations people today have confirmed that they will fight any aggressor who threatens their homes, families and way of life. ... read full story / add a comment
