28 year-old Celine Conroy from Dublin's North Inner City was brutally killed in Spain in August 2005. Her family wish to be represented at the trial later this year of the man alleged to have been her killer, and under Spanish law, they can be. However, court costs will amount to €10,000. Since this is a huge amount for the Conroy family, many people have called for the Department of Foreign Affairs to intervene, and make a grant to the family so that they can be present and fully informed of what is happening at the inquiry into their Celine's death. However the government has refused, forcing the family to try to raise funds locally, with a major benefit night on the 15th September at the Roayl Dublin Hotel. Most Irish readers will probably not recognise the name Alfredo Stroessner, nor upon learning he was the military dictator of Paraguay (one of the smallest least productive or even individually characteristic states of South America) think him significant. Many Irish readers will wonder why I even both bringing their attention to his imminent death at 93 years in Brasilia where he has lived in exile since 1989. Alfredo Stroessner as dictator of Paraguay (1954-1989) offered exile to the World War 2 Nazi leadership, working closely with the group "ODESSA", his regime facilitated the proven flight & indentity changes of individuals such as Josef Mengele and is still suspected by some as organising the escape from justice of Martin Bormann and even more historically perversive - Adolf Hitler himself. As such an instrumental character in the post war flight of Nazi's and SS, many readers might be surprised to know Stroessner enjoyed in his time excellent relations with the USA. & as such played a key role in "operation Condor" that installed right wing fascistic dictatorships throughout the continent. & even murkier, saw ex-officers of the SS return to work for the CIA and local intelligence services of the dictatorships of Chile, Argentina & Brazil. ... read full story / add a comment

David Hicks, good, bad or just plain stupid remains an Australian son. Democratic nations have a responsibility to protect their citizens in times of need; a number of democratic nations have already successfully repatriated their citizens from the illegal torture centre of Guantanamo Bay; however, after a period of four years the Howard government has been unable or unwilling to effect the repatriation of David Hicks. If a truly strong case against Hicks existed it surely would have been prosecuted to the full advantage of the terrorist scare campaign that Bush constantly wages on the American people. The fact that the USA is loath to give Hicks a fair and open trial, and in view of the obvious manipulative tactics utilised by corrupt U.S. ‘legal’ officers to delay proceedings, it would appear that the grounds upon which the U.S. military have based their ‘case’ are extremely flimsy and/or could attract litigation for illegal detention, torture and human rights abuses! ... read full story / add a comment
