In 1956 M. King Hubbert predicted a moment when the world would reach a peak in oil production. Since then a debate has raged, mainly between geologists and economists, about the future of oil production and the impact this future will have on everyday life. Robert Looby interviewed leading figures from both sides of the debate. http://www.threemonkeysonline.com/threemon_article_peak_oil_production_debate.htm ... read full story / add a comment

As we know the vast majority of children on this Earth don't get fed enough. They don't even get vaccines. But in the occidental tradition, the campaign for proper nutrition has long formed a basic demand of those interested in the well being of our children. Every teacher will tell you, that their work is undermined more often than not in deprived areas by the presence of "hunger" in the classroom. Ireland as one of the richest countries in the world could do well to emulate poorer states such as the UK and Switzerland in the providing of nutritious meals to its children, and incidently employment to those who would cook those meals. ... read full story / add a comment

Right on time for the heated phase of mobilization for April 2nd, 2005, the second European Action Day, a new film is released that focuses on international resistance against refugee camps and deportation prisons. “No Lager – Nowhere” is a European Co-production, German/English, 39 minutes, Berlin 2005. Released last week, it is a 39 minute video which brings together images from various anti-lager actions that have taken place across Europe in the past. The video contains fottage from actions both outside and inside refugee and migrant detainee camps in Germany, Slovenia, Italy, Australia, the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands. The film documents various experiences and actions from eight countries: a collection of testimonies, but mainly a patchwork of images of resistance, which should encourage and inspire to intensify and to transnationalise the struggles against the "lagerregimes". Book worms, and students of Italian here's a new titlie which might interest you. But if you're a nutter, (like the type who climbed on to the St Peter's basilica dome last saturday and asked for a lottery for orphans) you're *not to* read it. In fact none of you are to read it. Consider it as bad for your moral development as the Da Vinci Code. If you're very talented, and related to a government member, you might like to write your own Irish take on it and get a salary in addition to your tax free income. ... read full story / add a comment
