Women die at the hands of the occupying US forces; but most women die at the hands of the "Resistance". Read the full article by Mary Riddell at the link.

Where death is the penalty for going bare-headed

If our leaders are intent on finding peace in Iraq, they could begin by upholding women's basic human rights

Black is never out of fashion in Iraq. Some women, the bereaved, have not cast off their mourning robes since 2003. Others, Christians included, wear Muslim dress as camouflage to preserve their lives. Driving a car or walking bare-headed is a come-on to executioners in a country where last year's Western fashions have become this season's shroud.

I think we should all take a look at what is so important about indymedia work and why it is so important and what it means to each one of us. I hope that we draw courage of conviction from Brad's example and that we stand together throughout the indymedia network and as individuals to redouble our efforts. I think you all know that it could have been any one of us. But, it is so much easier for them to take us one at a time. We stand much more strongly together in what we can all be proud of. Our brave common struggle. Indymedia. ... read full story / add a comment

Standing on a damp road in the predawn morning surrounded by dozens of hostile police officers, it was easy to picture yourself in Ardoyne, Portadown or the Lower Ormeau.

As the anticipation built in preparation for the arrival of the unwanted visitors, determined to trundle through the community, it almost felt like the marching season as well.

But this wasn’t Dunloy or Bellaghy. Rossport is a small Gaeltacht community in probably the most remote part of Co Mayo. Take away the legions of Guards and protestors and it would be hard to imagine confrontation ever taking place on a road enveloped by bleak bogland and foreboding forest. ... read full story / add a comment

Pope Benedict today professed regret at the Ferns Sexual abuse scandals and solidarity
with the victims. This might be the first papal utterance of understanding on the issue of child
sexual abuse which tormented a generation of Children. The message was relayed at
an Irish Episcopal Conference at the Vatican today.

Its a start.
It's an acknowledgement of the torment that people went through.
It is not an apology or acceptance of responsibility for the handling and
covering up of the issue.

Pope Benedict was at the head of the council which investigated the issue of Child Sexual Abuse.

Speaking during a visit to the area this morning, Mr Sargent said he blamed Mr Dempsey for the ongoing dispute due to his failure to intervene.

"This situation is unfortunately going to deteriorate and I put the onus on Minister Noel Dempsey to exercise his responsibilities to ensure a resolution of this matter and not just hide behind the legal small print which he seems to be relying on at the moment," he said.

TCD phil or hist wheeled out Andrem Choudry to spout old scarey stuff about Islam for like the third year and row the other night, I guess they can't find anyother fool to turn up for their pretend debate/cirucs, while they pretned it to be grown up by wearing tuxes..All groups should be very selective in who they invite to talk at meetings.

A very interesting article in the Irish Times today, considering the background to the siting of the giant gas refinery that Shell seek to construct at Beal an Átha Buí (known in English as Ballinaboy, Bellinaboy or Bellanaboy).

The views in the article are worth paying attention to, since the authors are extremely well-qualified to comment on this subject. Leo Corcoran was previously Engineering Manager of Bord Gáis and Brian Coyle is a partner with consulting engineers Coyle Kennedy. Perhaps rather than arguing with people who are not as well qualified to discuss these issues on the comments section of indymedia articles on the continuing occupation of Erris by Shell and their security forces, we should simply refer people to this piece.

2-4 May 2007 . Conference at the University of Albaerta, Edmonton, AB, Canada.

In 1929 Virginia Woolf predicted that women in another century or so if given the opportunity
and rooms of their own, will have the habit of freedom and the courage to write exactly
what we think, seeing human beings in relation to each other and in relation to reality.
Our knowledge based economy and society have made such an opportunity more
tangible for some and more elusive for others. Rooms of their own Considers the
situation of women in and beyond the academy. By heightening awareness , extending
the knowledge base and forming practical recommendations, the conference assesses the
challenges and conditions for women to participate in this new reality. ... read full story / add a comment
