Ba mhaith linn ómós a thabhairt do na 18, 437 daoine a chaith vóta do Shinn Féin in Iarthar Thír Eoghain ar an 7 Márta. Islamist militants and terrorist groups pose a particular danger to Iraqi women. Many women’s organizations and activists inside Iraq have documented the increasing Islamist threats to women: the pressure to conform to certain dress codes, the restrictions in movement and behaviour, incidents of acid thrown into women’s faces and even targeted killings. After the U.S. invasion in 2003, many women in Basra, for example, reported that they were forced to wear a headscarf or restrict their movements in fear of harassment from men. Female students at the University of Basra reported that since the war ended groups of men began stopping them at the university gates, shouting at them if their heads were not covered ... read full story / add a comment

This is thrilling stuff. I could point you in loads of directions at stunning analysis & biting cartoons. But it's best just to look at the nitty gritty of the pieces of paper that go into Hansard - the official record of the Houses of Commons and Lords SW1A Aaakkkmi6mi5. now one of those is a real secret society with hoods on. & I'm not talking about hoodies or asbestos. We do though (get hoodies & asbestos) because we're scum. Remember that the link in this "other press" article is to a site envisioned for people who aren't like you, that's why it's called "they work for you". Thanks to the foresight of some maligned predecessors & hard bleeding by other predecessors - we either live in the bubble of the Irish diasporia or in the republic of Ireland & a lot of voting households up the wee north. & it's not wee actually.... It's global. anyway ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

People may have missed this when it was publicised, since the protest coincided with (extensively reported) Shell to Sea protest in Mayo. The Wheelock family's plight has been highlighted on this site, so readers will be interested in the report on the forensic testing of Terence Wheelock's clothes. Since the Irish Times is subscription I reproduce the article here in full. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Sinn Féin have always been prepared to meet with anyone, and discuss anything. The party has been excluded and silenced for so long in its history that there have been very few occasions when it has seemed correct to refuse to speak to someone, however much the people concerned might be considered unpopular or wrong. On the issue of the invasion of Iraq, Sinn Féin has often been critiscised for even speaking to Bush and Blair while the war was ongoing. This article from the Guardian might restore some people's faith that the party's representatives were not giving the British and Americans an easy time of it during these meetings. Not that it did much good of course. But better to try and fail, perhaps, than refuse to engage at all... ... read full story / add a comment

Now that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac) - one of the main engines for America's support of Israel - is opening its annual policy conference today in Washington with such keynote speakers as Dick Cheney, Nancy Pelosi, the house speaker and Tzipi Livni, Israel's foreign minister, it's clear Palestine needs no further enemies, but, bejaysus, out steps Barack Obaba from his sheeps clothing to renege on his previous near pristine support for Palestine. ... read full story / add a comment

There is something politically odd about Bush’s tour of various Latin American countries. South American nations were ‘lost’ to the U.S. some time ago – the price paid for America’s fixation in the Middle East. Bush is loathed internationally but is particularly despised in Latin America. The Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez accurately called Bush a “political cadaver” and led 20,000 Argentinian supporters in the chant, “gringo go home”, during his counter-tour of the region. ... read full story / add a comment

In keeping with usual prectice, the police of the Islamo-Fascist Iranian state attacked women who were gathering to celebrate International Women's Day. In Dublin we dealt with their Catholic equivalents at the fake clinic. Sadly in Iran Clerical Fascists won the day. Iranian police clashed on Thursday with scores of rights activists who gathered in front of parliament to celebrate International Women's Day, one of the activists said. "Police attacked a gathering of some 700 women's rights activists and hit them with batons," the activist, who asked not to be named, told Reuters. Police cars and ranks of police blocked the roads to prevent the demonstrators from marching, the activist said. ... read full story / add a comment

During the Scooter Libby trial which ended this week , it was revealed that governments like to release bad news on a Friday on the assumption that most stories that appear on a Saturday are not followed up. We can expect tomorrow's news to be dominated by the north’s local council elections results ,so all around, it would seem like a good day to announce the launch of an inquiry into collusion between the RUC and the IRA’s security department “It is thought that a number of IRA killers were protected from prosecution because they were working as agents for Special Branch and other agencies.” ... read full story / add a comment ![]()
