"There were calls today for an investigation into the Scottish election after polling descended into chaos with tens of thousands spoilt ballot papers, faulty counting machines and bad weather delaying the return of ballot boxes. With two simultaneous elections being held under three different voting systems, some seats saw more than a 1,000 spoilt papers being discarded. Although the SNP leader, Alex Salmond, won his own seat and appeared set for a narrow national victory, a result is not now expected until the early afternoon." or several weeks if the legal challenges are succesful. Thus it is very difficult to say how the Scottish have "voted" or "not voted". ... read full story / add a comment

As the General Election looms, and the EPA hearing draws to a close, Áine Ryan draws a few conclusions about the current state of play in Corrib saga in the current edition of the Mayo news. She points out that Shell have no approved route for their pipeline, and when they come up with one (if they ever do) they will have to go through the whole process again. They also have to deal with the fact that politicians like Martin Ferris and Tommy Broughan could well be in the government next month, and the Shell to Sea campaign, although shaken by police brutality, has not gone away... ... read full story / add a comment

This is a link to a story published on one of the Women's sites in October 2006, by a Polish activist and rights campaigner. She was delighted with the ability of women to work in unity over shared areas of concern which normally would not be in their political interests, but the results of globalised economy and cultural debasement had made the interests of unity pertinent to all the women who worked together. The image is of campaigners who worked on justice for the dissappeared in Guatemala, their campaign against debasement is ongoing. ... read full story / add a comment

In this article by George Monbiot, he spells out what is going on politically with Climate Change and states that they are aware of the real depth of changes required which they have purposely avoided and instead have committed to much less drastic changes which will have the effect of condemning millions to die. It would seem what he has identified is that the body of capitalism of which the current crop of political leaders are the stewards, is unable and unwilling to make the neccessary changes, because it inherently recognises that this would be a challenge to the system itself. It looks like they plan to somehow muddle through, but unfortunately muddling through this problem is not the easy option it normally is. ... read full story / add a comment

A number of factors have recently formed a conjunction, which provided a new view of a popular ‘reality’. Whenever the flames of the terrorist ‘threat’ begin to wane convenient arrests are made that fan the embers back into flames of concern. Recent police raids in Sydney and Melbourne have resulted in the arrests of two Sri Lankan Tamils; “two men have appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on terrorism related charges,” ran the intro from one media outlet while another ran with, “men face terrorism charges after raids.” I’m sure we all get the drift but it should be noted that assistant commissioner to the Federal Police, Frank Prendergast, went to lengths "to make it clear that these men weren't involved in any possible attacks on Australian soil.” Well then, what? ... read full story / add a comment

Rumours have been rife these last few days that Fidel Castro would make his first appearance since his autistic younger brother Raul took over the reins of power temporarily last 31 july. However, as the Cuban Mayday began to move a few hours ago - neither of the Castro brothers were to be seen. Instead Salvador Valdés, secretary general of the Central Workers' union of Cuba led the march which Fidel has now missed twice. Raul Castro has never appeared in his official capacity nor been named as such in any broadcast by Havana. ... read full story / add a comment

This could shake up the election a little. What kind of people work for the HSE? They think they can prevent women from travelling and that they can use the Gardai to enforce their whims. United Press International distributed the story below. The link will presumably disappear when they realise what they've reported is a mish mash of real and imagined stories. It's interesting to see what they think is believable. When Bertie shows up in Washington every year, do they have a clear idea of who he is? Do they know where Ireland is? More importantly, is our news about the rest of the world so unreliable? (In other news, the President of Scotland announced that the French elections can be cancelled if the Socialist party don't agree to support the bin tax, say sources in Baghdad...) ... read full story / add a comment
