When the IRA split in December 1969 the dissidents set up a Provisional Army Council until a proper IRA convention could re-constitute the organisation. That convention took place in September 1970 but by then the name 'Provisional' or 'Provo' had stuck and was used as shorthand by both supporters and the media, despite the distaste some veterans in the Movement had for that term. ... read full story / add a comment

Natascha Kampusch told viewers of Austrian television what it's like to be locked in a cellar for 10 years tonight. She's gone global. In fact she's top of the ratings. Natascha was all but forgotten about by Austrians a decade ago, but now reproduction and syndication rights of her interview have been traded worldwide. Each country & language giving it's own spin & peculiar title. I phoned my local television station which airs the interview tomorrow to complain at its choice of title which in English is "Natasha's confessions". ... read full story / add a comment

A report by Israel’s National Insurance Institute shows that another 100,000 people fell below the poverty line in Israel bringing the total impoverished to 1.6m or 24.7% of the population. The report also indicated that Israel at 35% had the highest child poverty rate amongst capitalist countries. Much of this has been caused by various cutbacks in social spending from previous military adventures with further cuts planned as a result of the most recent war in Lebanon. Unemployment is also running at 9%. ... read full story / add a comment

Workers at the National Aquatic Centre have served notice of industrial action, it was revealed this afternoon.
The latest development stems from a dispute between the company which runs the centre, Dublin Waterworld, and SIPTU. The company has refused to recognise SIPTU union membership.

The union has claimed that four people were wrongfully dismissed from the company, including three of its members.

The action will take the form of a ban on overtime, a work to rule and unannounced short work stoppages.

Surely it is time to restore intelligent, sane, Democratic secular government throughout the world! Over the past eight years we have all had a taste of the simplistic binary ‘us or them’ logic of religionists; the reality is that the majority of people on the planet reject religious divisionism and the associated violent ‘solutions’ of criminals, liars, demented murderers and delusional fools. ... read full story / add a comment

Vincent Paquette & Mario Beauregard are tippy toppy scientists based in Canada who have built their reputation scanning happy brains. Meaning, they have paid their mortage, put their kids through school, gone on holidays & generally got on with it all thanks to ample government & some small corporate funding. During which they've selected small groups of "happy individuals" & put them through brain scans to discover what really kicks that happiness switch".

Having had wonderful results on their neural scans of men at orgasm they have now recruited no less than 15 Carmelite nuns (who belong to the order founded by the very happy Teresa in today's illustration) to go through functional magnetic resonance whislt they remember the most intense..... ... read full story / add a comment

The Second World War started on the 1 September 1939. The invasion of Nazi Germany into Poland started on this day. This very day didn't only become the beginning of the horrible and sanguinary war in Europe but as well the day of the onset of the pan European resistance. This happened 67 year ago. And then came Victory. It seemed that Nazism was conquered once and for all. But today we face people and whole organized groups, who popularize the supremacy of one race, ethnos or religion. It turns out that virtual monsters are tough to be buried at once. That's why on 1 September we keep iterating over and over again - "resistance to Nazism didn't remain in the past and is crucial today".

DUP is beneficiary of daft eejits' ramblings

There was to be a meeting of the Flat Earth Society (Irish republican section) in Toome last night. They were to try to think how to avoid falling off the edge of the world. We were promised a gathering of Real IRA, Continuity IRA, and wait for it, INLA members 'disillusioned with the leadership of Gerry Adams'. So there you are now. You didn't know that Gerry Adams was the leader of the Real IRA, Continuity IRA and INLA.

Interesting nevertheless that they all acknowledge that Adams is the leader of republicanism. Their beef is that they don't like where he's leading the movement. Too bad. They're not in it. So after years of ineffectual bitching about him they've decided to look for 'a way forward for republicanism'.

Harold H. Thompson Anarchist Prisoner

Harold H. Thompson is an anarchist prisoner serving life plus sentences in Tennessee, USA after a series of farcical trials.
Harold is well known for his work as a 'jailhouse lawyer' and copes with prison by fighting for his fellow prisoner in the courts for some semblance of real justice.

"I am an anti-authoritarian, anti-racist, anti-sexist, anarchist revolutionary of proud Irish heritage. I am also a vegetarian and strongly support the animal liberation movement. I stand for civil/human rights and will not break, bend nor be intimidated. I stand in solidarity with all people struggling against oppression but most particularly with my brothers and sisters in the anarchist movement".
