This is obviously interesting as a spin on the Shell to Sea campaign, that people shouldn't be interested in it because Sinn Féin support it, and the fact that it chimes in with SF politics should make everyone wary of it.

What is also fascinating is the insight into the worldview of the author (and by extension, those who pay him and read him). He believes that if something reminds people of the recent conflict in and about Nothern Ireland, then people in the rest of the country will turn off from it. Not because of the issues, but just because it brings up unhappy associations.

Therefore if the police want to diminish public support, they should baton charge the protesters, the author seems to be saying. Perhaps plastic bullets would be the next logical step in Mayo? ... read full story / add a comment

Both FEIC and DAWC were today calling on the council to stand by that commitment, following evidence unearthed by the North West Telegraph that Raytheon had been developing the Joint Effects Tactical Targeting System (JETTS) for the MoD, which aims to improve "lethality". During a meeting, Raytheon bosses confirmed to the council that the revelations in the documents, obtained from Invest NI under the Freedom of Information Act, were true.

A story in today's Sunday Independent would appear to reveal an attempt to fracture the Shell To Sea campaign. The story focuses attention on Maura Harrington who (among others) can be seen to be assaulted by Gardai in many photos on IMC.ie e.g. http://indymedia.ie/article/79039

Mark Garavan is quoted as criticising some "unnamed person" as being "violent". I wonder what he actually meant and whether Daniel McConnell understand him to be talking about Sgt. Connor O'Reilly or some of the police officers that were responsible for these assaults

Ludicrous assumptions are many but perhaps the most absurd is the assumption that those who steal the greater percentage of available wealth and continue to implement economic strategies designed to enslave are (somehow) safe and secure. The indigenous people of Rossport are not the only threatened by oil and gas exploration.
In March 2006, the US Senate passed a measure in the budget bill that opened the Artic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling - as the region suffers from some of the worst oil spills in its history from the pipelines to the existing Prudhoe Bay facilities. http://www.freepress.org/departments/display/3/2006/1868

Not too long ago Rupert Murdock would have trounced anyone in his media group for letting the ‘cat out of the bag’ (stating plain truth). It was therefore with jaw-dropping amazement that a local Australian audience listened to Murdock plainly state that we should not allow a particular administration to affect our attitude to the United States. “Administrations come and go”, he said, inferring REAL POWER, which Murdock represents, continues unaffected by the whims of democratic process! ... read full story / add a comment

If after comparing actual events with posturing and rhetoric you conclude that Western governments serve minority corporate interests rather than the interests of the people, you would have discovered the lie that is democracy. You may also be surprised to discover that the majority of people who live in so-called democratic societies are actually compliant slaves! Governments that are SUBJECT to the rule of minority Corporate/Financial elites could hardly be expected to serve the interests of the majority if their masters specialise in inequity, disparity and the concentration of wealth in the fewest possibly hands. The appropriate response to any politician who states they are serving the interests of democracy, liberty or the people should therefore be, LIAR – unless of course you belong to the category of mindless slaves referred to above! ... read full story / add a comment
