There is something politically odd about Bush’s tour of various Latin American countries. South American nations were ‘lost’ to the U.S. some time ago – the price paid for America’s fixation in the Middle East. Bush is loathed internationally but is particularly despised in Latin America. The Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez accurately called Bush a “political cadaver” and led 20,000 Argentinian supporters in the chant, “gringo go home”, during his counter-tour of the region. ... read full story / add a comment

In keeping with usual prectice, the police of the Islamo-Fascist Iranian state attacked women who were gathering to celebrate International Women's Day. In Dublin we dealt with their Catholic equivalents at the fake clinic. Sadly in Iran Clerical Fascists won the day. Iranian police clashed on Thursday with scores of rights activists who gathered in front of parliament to celebrate International Women's Day, one of the activists said. "Police attacked a gathering of some 700 women's rights activists and hit them with batons," the activist, who asked not to be named, told Reuters. Police cars and ranks of police blocked the roads to prevent the demonstrators from marching, the activist said. ... read full story / add a comment

During the Scooter Libby trial which ended this week , it was revealed that governments like to release bad news on a Friday on the assumption that most stories that appear on a Saturday are not followed up. We can expect tomorrow's news to be dominated by the north’s local council elections results ,so all around, it would seem like a good day to announce the launch of an inquiry into collusion between the RUC and the IRA’s security department “It is thought that a number of IRA killers were protected from prosecution because they were working as agents for Special Branch and other agencies.” ... read full story / add a comment

During the height of the bin tax battle, Anti-Bin Tax activists argued that the introduction of bin charges would lead to amongst other things, fewer jobs, increase in collection routes for remaining workers, increase in illegal dumping, introduction of private operators and the end of the waiver system. In two articles in the IMPACT news it would seem that the penny has finally dropped there. I post the articles here in full as non-IMPACT members might not get to see these articles. ... read full story / add a comment

Right-wing Sarkozy (Minister of the Interior), famous for provoking and fanning the riots of 2006 (see http://ie.indymedia.org/article/74925 ) has proposed a new law which would make it illegal for anyone except an accredited journalist to take footage of violence. The irony of the timing has not been lost on many as Tuesday was the anniversary of the Rodney King beating in LA which sparked what locals call the "uprising" and others call the "LA Riots". ... read full story / add a comment

Once again Iranian women are repressed by the mullahs. For demanding even the most basic of rights they are imprisoned. Women are hanged or stoned to death for adultery or sex outside of marriage. As International Womens Day approachs, think of the women in Iran who face death at the hands of the mullahs. The full article is at the url below. Iran women arrested over protest Iran's authorities have arrested more than 32 women activists protesting outside a courthouse in Tehran. The protesters were showing solidarity with five women on trial for organising a protest last June against laws they say discriminate against women. ... read full story / add a comment

Apologists for Shell in the Corrib Gas dispute often quote the company's assurances on safety as if they were unquestionable. Shell likes to portray itself as a large company with a strong commitment to safety, especially the safety of its workers. However, continuing judgements against Shell tell a different story, as this Guardian article from yesterday shows. Some commmentators say the dismal safety record of the company shows that there is a policy within Shell of weighing up the potential cost of paying out damages for death or injury against the cost of implementing safety measures. When the former is less than the latter, Shell is prepared to put lives at risk, showing that the company's main concern is its profit margin, and that this comes a long way before woorrying about safety. ... read full story / add a comment

Prior to the leadership of John Howard and his defence minister, Brendan (studs) Nelson, the Australian Defence Forces always did Australia proud. The reputation of the ADF preceded them in any theatre of war. Aussie fighters were once considered highly specialised and skilled, so it is with a sad heart and severe disappointment that I report the raid on Alfredo Reinado’s hide-out resulted in the needless deaths of four Timorese and a ‘rebel leader’ who easily escaped to the mountains. No one is actually sure Reinado was present at the time of the attack! ... read full story / add a comment

An Australian son abandoned by the nation and his government has decided to fight the fabricated charges brought against him by the criminal Bush regime. You bloody little bewdy! Against all odds and after years of psychological and physical torture Hicks proves his mettle. The murdering yanks and the slimy Howard government COULDN’T BREAK OUR LITTLE AUSSIE FIGHTER! One can only imagine the forlorn faces of the Howard servile government who no doubt desperately hoped that Hicks would break and accept a plea bargain in time for the elections. The Hicks case as previously stated has all the ingredients to bring down the servile government of John ‘deputy-sheriff’ Howard. ... read full story / add a comment |
