Archbishop Oscar Romero
international / crime and justice Monday March 26, 2007 - 09:54 by C Murray   text 9 comments (last - wednesday april 04, 2007 - 16:57)   image 4 images
The 24th of March 2007 was the 27th anniversary of the death of
Archbishop Oscar Romero who was murdered in San Salvador at
the orders of Roberto D'Aubisson.

For the first time in 26 years the annual mass to commerorate him was refused permission
in the friary of Adam and Eve's Church in Dublin.

Adam and Eve's Church is a Franciscan Basillica on the Liffey quays
just opposite the Four Courts and has educated many Missionaries who
work in all parts of the world.

Before Romero was murdered he was denounced by the Catholic church and ignored
by the Carter Regime.

Fire at refinery in 2005
international / sci-tech Sunday March 25, 2007 - 00:01 by Shell watcher   image 1 image
This interesting article from a hearing earlier thos week into safety at energy refineries makes scary reading for anyone who is being forced to live with one of these monsters on their doorstep.

It seems that in the first six weeks of this year, there were 43 reported serious incidents inthe United States, any one of which could have turned into a major disaster.

A former member of Shell's staff spoke about two incidents at the refinery where he worked (in Washington). One of these was a near miss but could easily have resulted in a huge fire cloud, the other caused six deaths among contractors.

It seems in a majority of cases, poor safety procedures are to blame.

Looking back on the 2005 fire I was reminded of this quotation from a Texas City Resident.
Mr. Herman Batist:

"Anytime you live by a plant like this, you've got to worry about this kind of situation. They don't happen very often, but when they do, the first thing you check is which way the wind is blowing"

Wind down from your artificially induced stress/pace and confront your personal reality – take stock for a moment. Your existence has been confined to sustaining and maintaining a system that makes ever-increasing demands on your liberty and freedom – the pillars upon which joy and satisfaction are built/derived! The frenzied pace of western society is largely the result of the manic need for ever increasing profits and greater concentrations of wealth in the fewest possible hands, which inevitably places higher demands on those at the bottom of the financial scale. Obtaining wealth is simply a matter of applying unfair downward pressure in favour of upward flowing benefits; wealth is not created it is the result of manipulation and/or theft – the historical record bears this out. Put simply, profit is exploitation/theft! ... read full story / add a comment

Low Carbon Life.

“low carbon” life will require changes in how we live. It will require a shift in public consciousness, as well as a willingness to do without conveniences that may now seem essential. Energy inefficiency and waste are so woven into the fabric of life that it is both very easy for some and very hard for others to change.
The business of climate change will create demand for innovation, and will change and reshape markets immediately. Investors will be asking questions to identify companies that will succeed or fail in an environment of increased climate change risk.

The City Of Derry Airport is expected to be the first in Europe to officially ban controversial CIA flights transporting terror suspects to secret prisons, it emerged today.
The publicly-owned airport confirmed it is working out the practicalities of an ``anti-rendition'' policy after discussions with Amnesty International.

At the minute the practicalities of this are being looked at by council officers with a view to bringing a motion before the council - I obviously hope we can do that

On parts of the continent and in the UK, garden allotments are popular- if you live in a flat or don't have access to a garden it's a great way to grow your own veggies, get more self- sufficient and keep money out of the pockets of big supermarkets. In the UK they cost anything from £16-£50 a year to rent.
It will not be possible for much longer to transport food from the other side of the planet due to the rising cost of oil and gas, and besides this is not environmentally sustainable. In addition, harvests are failing or producing less due to chaotic climate change. As a result the cost of food is and will continue to climb.

The current edition of the Mayo Advertiser carries an article on proceedings at Mayo Council's monthly meeting.

This month, Sinn Féin Cllr Gerry Murray proposed a motion calling on the Council to demand that the government renegotiate the current deal, whereby all the profits of the sale of the natural gas in the Corrib field will leave the country and go to the shareholders in Shell, Statoil and Marathon Oil.

Sinn Féin want to know why the money can't fund hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure projects in this country.

Cllr Murray pressed the FG Cllr present to say whether whether if, should that party be in govt after the general election, Enda Kenny would continue with the present policy of giving away the country's resources, but no answer was forthcoming.

We are all always told that the Health Service is rotten, broken, and flawed. This is not because this is true but because the FG/Labour run media conspire to keep the truth silent. While America leads the world in insularism and denial, Australia is the world leader in complacency and apathy. No cultural equivalent for the Oz expression, “she’ll be right, mate”, exists anywhere – notwithstanding the variation of “who gives a shit?” Today, non-involvement is proving to be a very costly cultural habit. America has become the world’s most hated nation and will soon attract very real consequences for its actions, one of which is the acquisition of Australia as a colonial trophy. Australia remains an international laughing stock under the servile leadership of lackey prime minister, John Howard; Aussies are experiencing their eleventh year under the rule of the most slavish, gutless, lying, duplicitous, cringing, government on record. No other leader in world history has displayed the servility and cowardice of John Howard. When America says jump, the despicable little coward, Howard, says how high, boss! ... read full story / add a comment
