SEANAD leader Mary O'Rourke was last night in hot water after saying some of her campaign helpers had worked "like blacks". On the otherhand, there have been few Dail or Seanad politicians as critical of Irish racism and indeed, State immigration policies, as Mary O'Rourke. Surely it was an unfortunate gaffe. ... read full story / add a comment

The Irish company "Daniel Technologies" was gloating about it's role in a contract signed between the Irish military and an Israeli manufacturer of helmuts yesterday.

In a "puff" piece, free of any political or social context in the Sunday Business Post yesterday Stephen Roe, managing director of Daniel Technologies, said the awarding of the contract last month followed a “tough and lengthy'‘ test and evaluation period.

No mention was made of the fact that the Israeli company in question calls the IDF its most important customer. Or no reference of course to the IDF occupation of Palestine.

A group of file sharers, rippers and burners, copier and pasters in Sweden have formed a new political party to stand in Swedish elections and fight intellectual property law.

I hope they will be copied. :-)©

We know the arguments, becuase we share them. No pun intended. You may not say an idea is your property. & to treat it as such, in a time of starvation and disease is evil.

Abortion has become a central issue in the forthcoming general election in Italy. Berlusconi’s government has set up a review into the application of the present law, which allows abortion within the first three months of pregnancy. If unchallenged the results will be deeply damaging for Italian women.

Anne Mc Shane reports from the struggle over abortion rights in Italy

Less than 24 hours after making a key note speech to a meeting of Spain's armed forces, Lt. General Jose Mena Aguado has been placed under house arrest for 8 days as a "first measure" for suggesting armed action against Catalonia. He thus overstepped his position as a member of the military, and now enjoying support from the right wing opposition (PP) the incident takes on worrying implications for European Democracy.

BEIJING, China (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. has shut down the Internet journal of a Chinese blogger that discussed politically sensitive issues, including a recent strike at a Beijing newspaper.

♣‡ In 1988 Pat Robertson's 'Christian Coalition' controlled 40% of the delegates at the Republican Convention and helped to put George W's father into the White House. Today he continues to represent a genocidal cocktail of American Ultra-Nationalism and Charismatic 'Christian' Fundamentalism in support of extreme elements of Israeli Zionism. He's a whack-job, but too important to ignore. ... read full story / add a comment

After the July bombings in London, a number of Pakistani immigrants living in Greece were illegaly detained and tortured by Greek agents working with MI6 agents based in Greece.

Despite attempted cover-up and and denials from both the Greek and British government, the MI6 agent who was present at the time has since been recalled to London and the British government has issued a D-notice forbidding the media from naming the lead MI6 agent - though the story has been covered by both The Times and The Guardian. ... read full story / add a comment

The forces that divide humanity issue from religion, tribalism, racism and self-interest. The fact that right wing groups emphasise the ‘virtues’ of these principles clearly identifies their support base and driving principles. It would seem obvious that an assault on the principles that create undesirable circumstances is preferable to dealing with the (disastrous) consequences after the event. ... read full story / add a comment
