28 year-old Celine Conroy from Dublin's North Inner City was brutally killed in Spain in August 2005. Her family wish to be represented at the trial later this year of the man alleged to have been her killer, and under Spanish law, they can be.

However, court costs will amount to €10,000.

Since this is a huge amount for the Conroy family, many people have called for the Department of Foreign Affairs to intervene, and make a grant to the family so that they can be present and fully informed of what is happening at the inquiry into their Celine's death.

However the government has refused, forcing the family to try to raise funds locally, with a major benefit night on the 15th September at the Roayl Dublin Hotel.

The Northside People article below gives some background to the case. ... read full story / add a comment

Most Irish readers will probably not recognise the name Alfredo Stroessner, nor upon learning he was the military dictator of Paraguay (one of the smallest least productive or even individually characteristic states of South America) think him significant. Many Irish readers will wonder why I even both bringing their attention to his imminent death at 93 years in Brasilia where he has lived in exile since 1989.

Alfredo Stroessner as dictator of Paraguay (1954-1989) offered exile to the World War 2 Nazi leadership, working closely with the group "ODESSA", his regime facilitated the proven flight & indentity changes of individuals such as Josef Mengele and is still suspected by some as organising the escape from justice of Martin Bormann and even more historically perversive - Adolf Hitler himself.

As such an instrumental character in the post war flight of Nazi's and SS, many readers might be surprised to know Stroessner enjoyed in his time excellent relations with the USA. & as such played a key role in "operation Condor" that installed right wing fascistic dictatorships throughout the continent. & even murkier, saw ex-officers of the SS return to work for the CIA and local intelligence services of the dictatorships of Chile, Argentina & Brazil.

David Hicks, good, bad or just plain stupid remains an Australian son. Democratic nations have a responsibility to protect their citizens in times of need; a number of democratic nations have already successfully repatriated their citizens from the illegal torture centre of Guantanamo Bay; however, after a period of four years the Howard government has been unable or unwilling to effect the repatriation of David Hicks. If a truly strong case against Hicks existed it surely would have been prosecuted to the full advantage of the terrorist scare campaign that Bush constantly wages on the American people. The fact that the USA is loath to give Hicks a fair and open trial, and in view of the obvious manipulative tactics utilised by corrupt U.S. ‘legal’ officers to delay proceedings, it would appear that the grounds upon which the U.S. military have based their ‘case’ are extremely flimsy and/or could attract litigation for illegal detention, torture and human rights abuses! ... read full story / add a comment

Sy Hersh (widely speculated to have lots of good CIA informants) writes in the New Yorker that the Bush administration needed the Israelis to invade Lebanon so that Hezbollah's long-range missiles could be removed (so that when the USA attacks Iran there won't be any possibility for retaliatory strikes
Israeli intelligence estimated at the outset of the air war that Hezbollah had roughly five hundred medium-range Fajr-3 and Fajr-5 rockets and a few dozen long-range Zelzal rockets; the Zelzals, with a range of about two hundred kilometres, could reach Tel Aviv. (One rocket hit Haifa the day after the kidnappings.) It also has more than twelve thousand shorter-range rockets. Since the conflict began, more than three thousand of these have been fired at Israel.

“The Israelis told us it would be a cheap war with many benefits,” a U.S. government consultant with close ties to Israel said. “Why oppose it? We’ll be able to hunt down and bomb missiles, tunnels, and bunkers from the air. It would be a demo for Iran.” ... read full story / add a comment

Consider the war in Lebanon a test scenario, a ‘dry run’ to test the international response to flagrant criminal actions. Now recall Russia’s failure to support Yugoslavia in the Balkans. Russia stalled and now Yugoslavia is no more, just a number of fragmented pseudo States overseen by NATO and the largest U.S. base of occupation in Europe, camp Bondsteel. It is well known today that the USA wouldn’t have dared if Russia had supported its traditional ally, but a drunken fool, Boris Yeltsin, was in command at the time, the rest is history. ... read full story / add a comment

Mrs. Eileen Wright's father died in 1972 leaving her mentally-handicapped brother Freddie Andrews the family residence beside Stormont and around 30, I repeat, thirty, Belfast city-centre properties to finance the upkeep and maintenance of the family residence for as long as Freddie would live.
Belfast's largest firm of solicitors, assisted a Belfast property developer to steal ALL Freddie's property including his family home. Even worse, the highest Courts in Northern Ireland, instead of having all Freddie's property reinstated and returned to him, have allowed their top legal officers to collude with corrupt solicitors and businessmen, support their criminal activity, condone their criminal activity and assist in the plunder of this mentally-handicapped man's property and money. Not only was Freddie Andrews unable to defend himself all those years ago against this shocking conduct, he wasn't really aware, and still isn't aware, of what was going on. Those in control of the legal system here in Northern Ireland refuse to allow the members of Freddie Andrews' family to even see the accounts of his plundered estate. A former Member of the English Parliament pleaded with the former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to have a public enquiry into this sordid affair, but without success. Other people including several top journalists, including the late Paul Foot, have fought to have justice done, but again without success.
