[Due to limited time and breaking all the Obituary rules] :- The death Of Norman Mailer has been announced:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Mailer and instead I want to focus on one issue about his writing and that is the Gilmore Case and the resultant book :- 'The Executioner's Song' which set a bar in documenting the issue of US capital Punishment and also tied into the Timothy Mc Veigh Case in an interesting manner. ... read full story / add a comment

One of the most serious issues of European exploitation, corrupt Charity activity & international relations Monday last saw Sarkozy play his "Super Sarko" role in a headline grabbing stunt the reaction to which has already bolstered calls for November 30th to be declared "No Sarko in Media Day". The government of Chad (in Africa) has started taking against so-called "charity" agencies who are accused of trafficking in children by arranging their adoption by European parents without the consent of their natural parents or surviving family or wards. This is a very big story which touches many other very important issues. In the last week both French & Spanish citizens were held in Chad under charges of "child-trafficking". The Spaniards included pilot, co-pilot and cabin crew of the jet on which the children would have been flown out of the state by the "Zoe's Ark" charity. ... read full story / add a comment

The Lisbon Treaty is at this time according to the Irish Times, 'In doubt' due to a big drop off in support for the re-negotiated Reform Treaty which sees the EU member states dropping the article on rights (article 3.3) and retaining for the most part the main body of the rejected Nice II Treaty. The next thing on the EU agenda is a meeting with the African nations in Lisbon toward the end of the year which aims to set in pace the economic architecture for further bi-laterals and free trade agreements which undercut these nations and have brought quality of life issues into the community airwaves and NGO's;- http://www.indymedia.ie/article/84739 ... read full story / add a comment

Jamers Turley outlines the history of the WRP and how it recieved money from despots such as Saddam and went to pretend that Iraq was a democracy. This raises questions as to why the SWP support the Iran Regime and portray it as progressive. It is now indisputable that Healy was looking beyond his own members and supporters for funds. It was this that led him in 1976 to send a WRP delegation to visit the Libyan government of Mu’ammar al-Qaddafi and to request money for a new printing press. Healy himself apparently visited Libya the following year.6 It is unclear the extent to which financial assistance was ultimately procured from Qaddafi. In his investigative documents relating to the 1985 split, David North claimed over £1 million in total from Libya, Ba’athist Iraq and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation.7 ... read full story / add a comment

This other press text lets you the aware reader see the declaration which kicked off the 2007 state of Emergency in Pakistan. It's a great little number which has already spawned a comprehensive encyclopedia page on English language wikipedia & means that the chances of numerous intelligent young Pakistani or Pakistani looking people, or even intelligent older people with Pakistani surnames getting their blogs noticed or opinions published are very good. It's great to be Pakistani. General Musharraf reckons his is the way to preserve that greatness whilst other worthy Pakistani politicians are coming out of the exile woodwork to volunteer to take him on. One favoured by RTE speaking from Saudi Arabia reckons things are going to Anarchy. Lovely you might think. In the article blow Mark Fischer of the Weekly Worker interviews Iranian Socialist Yassamine Mather on the events which took place at the STWC conference. How do you evaluate the development of Hands Off the People of Iran so far? The idea for such a campaign has been floating around in left Iranian exile circles for some time before concrete steps were taken about nine months ago. Its progress in that relatively short space of time seems to have been pretty rapid. It has been very rapid progress. I was initially very surprised at the level of support we picked up. This has manifested itself not simply in the ‘soft’ form of people signing the founding statement, but with many people coming forward over the past few weeks to publicly associate their names with our protests against Stop the War Coalition exclusions. ... read full story / add a comment

The Iraq Freedom Congress held its First Convention last week in Kirkurk. The IFC opposes both the Occupation of Iraq and the the sectarian Militias. The IFC slogans are "No Shiite ... No Sunni… ours is humanitarian identity" and "No to the occupation ... No to the sectarian gangs" On October 21, 2007 the first Convention of Iraq Freedom Congress was held in the city of Kirkuk, attended by many elected delegates who came from different provinces and cities of Iraq (Basra, Nasiriyah, Shatrah, Diwaniyah, Kut, Hashemite, Suwayrah, Numaniyah, Kifl, Hillah, Alexandria, Baghdad, Samarra, Tikrit, Bejee, Mosul and Kirkuk). The delegates were able to reach the conference hall despite the serious danger they could have faced on their way and the collapse of the security situation, such as booby-trapped cars, bombs and sectarian gangs. ... read full story / add a comment

Yassamine Mather in an article published in the Weekly Worker (25 Oct 07) deals with the growing threat of war against Iran. She also analyses developments amongst the Kurds and highlights how the Iraqi PUK are betraying other Kurds. If anyone is in any doubt about the level of the threat of war against Iran, I suggest they read the text of a speech by Tony Blair comparing “Iran’s extremism” to “rising fascism in the 1920s and 1930s” (Times Oct 19). Quiet clearly Blair has spent so much time in Israel that he repeats like a parrot the most stupid utterances of Israeli politicians - all this in line with the US administration’s plans for possible military attack against Iran and paving the way for more extensive sanctions. Worst of all for Iran’s leaders, Russian president Vladimir Putin, in Tehran for talks with the theocratic regime gave a stark warning that Russia will not oppose further sanctions and military strikes against Iran, unless it stopped its enrichment of nuclear-grade uranium. ... read full story / add a comment

Peter symonds reflects on the decision of the Bush Regime to brand the iranian Revolutionary Guards as a weapons proliferator and a supporter of terrorism. Who says irony is dead when the Bushistas come out with this kind of guff? Peter symonds also deals with the heightening tensions regarding nuclear power in Iran. The Bush administration’s unprecedented decision last week to brand the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a weapons proliferator and its Quds Force as a “supporter of terrorism” has heightened tensions with Tehran and undermined European efforts at negotiations, setting the stage for a US attack on Iran. While the White House still claims to be seeking a diplomatic solution to the current confrontation, a series of media articles have noted Washington’s increasingly bellicose rhetoric and warned that the US appears to have decided on military action against Iran. ... read full story / add a comment

The Dutch government have decided to ban shroom sales. But at least one hundred people gathered to save them Saturday last carrying colourful shroomie messages "When will they ban bread?" and "Boss of your own brain", they thus vowed to go on doing whatever it is they do to their brain. Amongst marchers were included the weighty psychedelic Arno Adelaars who criticised foreign tourists for getting pissed up on beer, gawking at prostitutes, stuffing their faces with hash cake & then thinking that's the time for a dose of psilicybin. Quite right. I agree. Rather than banning the shrooms they should ban the tourists. ... read full story / add a comment

In today's Guardian, John Pilger flagellates the hypocrisy of the West when it comes to Burma : Condoleezza Rice comes to mind. "The United States," she said, "is determined to keep an international focus on the travesty that is taking place in Burma." What she is less keen to keep a focus on is that the huge American company, Chevron, on whose board of directors she sat, is part of a consortium with the junta and the French company, Total, that operates in Burma's offshore oilfields. The gas from these fields is exported through a pipeline that was built with forced labour and whose construction involved Halliburton, of which Vice-President Cheney was chief executive". ... read full story / add a comment

Yes, you read that headline correctly! In a brilliant strike at the never ending hypocrisy of the US government, the new left wing President Rafael Correa of Ecuador said Washington must let him open a military base in Miami if the United States wants to keep using an air base on Ecuador's Pacific coast. The existing lease on the current US base in Ecuador expires in 2009. Now that this call has been made, the US govt will no doubt work hard to have him removed by then, as the base can surely be used for no other purposes than for their own self corporate interest. ... read full story / add a comment |
