On Morning Ireland this morning (16 July 2009) Cathal MacCoille asks Tom Geraghty of the Public Service Executive Union about some CSO statistics. Geraghty explains that they are bogus for the purpose MacCoile is using them - trying to argue that public sector workers get paid more than private sector workers. Geraghty also explains that the CSO recognise that fact. But MacCoille keeps asking the same question, oblivious of the fact that Geraghty keeps answering it. For once a dense RTE bore gets his answer - listen and laugh (there are few of them about these days). ... read full story / add a comment

Protestant abuse victims must also be heard Irish Times, Wednesday, July 1, 2009 http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opinion/2009/0701/1....html OPINION: Victims of Protestant prejudice and State neglect are at a disadvantage, writes DEREK LEINSTER YOU DON’T have to be a Catholic to be listened to as a victim of institutional abuse, but it seems to help. That is my experience as a Protestant victim of institutional neglect. Like all sufferers, I am a victim of prejudice. It was prejudice that forced my mother into the Bethany Home in Orwell Road, Rathgar in 1941 for the “social sin” (as one cleric put it) of being pregnant out of wedlock. To add to her burden, her gestating baby had a Catholic father. Marriage in those circumstances was out, and so was I, fostered out to a dysfunctional family in Wicklow where I was beaten black and blue and (I mention it since it seems to be what Irish people are most interested in) sexually molested. ... read full story / add a comment

Balazs Nagy: Can you tell a few words about yourself and how you got to the situation that you are in? Victor Agosto: Ok, I am Victor Agosto, I joined the Army of the United States in August of 2005. I was sent to Iraq in October of 2006. And I stayed there until November of 2007. And while I was in Iraq I turned against both wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And now my unit is sending me to Afghanistan - or wants to send me to Afghanistan - but I have already told them that I am not going to go and that I am not going to obey any orders supporting my unit's deployment to Afghanistan. ... read full story / add a comment

Discussion chaired by Frank McDonald, journalist with The Irish Times, on a broad range of architectural and developmental issues that have become apparent in Celtic Tiger Dublin. Contributors include Dr. Gary Boyd, Ciarán Cuffe TD, Robert Ballagh and Siobhain Ní Éanaigh. The majority of the speakers were very critical of Celtic Tiger Ireland, a change from previous "architectural discussion". The talk happened in Docklands "white elephant", CHQ, aka: Stack A. Sunday August 10 2008 was the day of the discussion, day after the worst rainfall that Ireland had ever seen in the month of august, a wake up call if ever there was one of how we have to adress climate chaos...http://radio.indymedia.org/es/node/17169 ... read full story / add a comment

Sometimes coincidences happen in a timely way, while at other times they appear to happen but are actually coordinated events. On Monday, the Tánaiste Mary Coughlan announced that Facebook, the popular social networking site, was setting up its head office for Europe in Dublin. Since Facebook doesn't actually make anything, it will have a negligible effect on the economy, but it sends the right sort of signal. At the same time (around midday on Monday) the profile page for the Shell to Sea campaign was removed from Facebook. Some Shell to Sea groups remain, but as anyone who uses Facebook will tell you, having a profile page is where the action is. Shell to Sea had a popular one, with lots of "friends" and activity on the page. It was very useful in spreading information about the campaign, especially outside Ireland. So Mary Coughlan goes on the radio to talk about Facebook and how its arrival in Ireland sends a strong signal. At the same moment, the Shell to Sea page is removed. Coincidence? ... read full story / add a comment

Black & Tans were "no angels" - major concession by Ken Loach critic BY CHRISTOPHER BARRETT An Phoblacht July 6 2006 Before it went on release, 'critics' who had not seen it, denounced Ken Loach's The Wind that Shakes the Barley. The London Times critic compared it to Nazi propaganda - ironic considering the role of ex-Black & Tans in reactionary and fascist politics in Britain. In the Daily Mail Ruth Dudley Edwards asked: "Why does Ken Loach loath his country so much?" - a question better addressed by Ruth to a mirror. Ruth also, in the manner of death penalty advocates discussing 'humane' methods of killing, informed us that the British Empire was "the most humane"...... ever, so there. ... read full story / add a comment

Over the years Hiphop Kulture has constantly remained under attack by the main cultures of the world who fear the loss of control over the new emerging generations. From the early Emcees and Deejays who were arrested during the park jams to the early Breakers who too were arrested for dancing on the streets; to the new “Hiphop Task Forces” monitoring Hiphoppas in the same way they monitor street gangs; and the recent attempts by some countries to ban “repetitive beats” and the wearing of hoodies. ... read full story / add a comment |
