Fine Gael has called on the Government to introduce a five point plan to cut A&E attendances by up to a 1/3. The plan which includes penalizing people who attend A&E units and also happen to be drunk, may put lives at risk. The proposals ignore the fact that the vast majority of those attending A&E units are actually in need medical aid and further that the majority of those in attendance never cause any disturbance to staff or fellow patients. One of the key planks of the policy calls for the doubling of A&E fees for those found to be under the influence of alcohol. The proposed fee of almost €100 will discourage people who may need medical aid from seeking it and will hit those on low incomes hardest, students in particular. ... read full story / add a comment

There were lots of elections in 2005, only a few of which got covered on indymedia ireland. But because the idea of democracy really took off so much, I wasn't able to write a "how did they vote or "not vote"" article as had in previous years been attempted. Just a quick recap - listed here. {My personal favourite was the Andorran general election.} ________________________________________________ ... read full story / add a comment

Following a brief period of burn-out after Mayday 2004 Anarchism enjoyed a huge resurgence in activity in 2005. With the founding of a radical book store in Temple bar, the massive libertarian mobilisation to Scotland and the formation of new libertarian organisations like GrassrootsDissent, Anarchist Youth, Revolt Video and Seomra Spraoi things have never looked so good around Dublin. ... read full story / add a comment

It was a war of course. It was a war, and the aim was to depose the Taliban regime, replacing it with a different one. Lots and lots of people died in the process. And as RAWA wrote to the Seattle Times recently: 'It goes without saying that Afghans will not see as their “liberators” those who drove the Taliban wolves through one door and unchained the rabid dogs of the NA through another.' Christmas will soon be upon us, the batteries will wear out, conversation will stimie, the turkey will curl and your spirits with it. Thus no more timely ocassion to remind everyone of the great and noble tradition of Irish Parlour Games. There are many which will brighten your yuletide, and i've thoughtfully made a small selection which will challenge all ages and levels of intelligence. There's surely an irish Parlour Game to suit you and yours on this little "human interest" list. ____________________________________________ ... read full story / add a comment
