Maybe it is not the sort of anti government story Sir Anthony would want. Minister Martin Cullen padding around in his first class pajamas on his first class flight to China has vanished, replaced by: "Cabinet opposed to across-the-board pay rises By RONALD QUINLAN ACROSS-the-board pay rises look like an increasingly unlikely outcome from the national pay talks as the Government attempts to rein in inflation and protect employment as the economic downturn continues." ... read full story / add a comment

Michael Casey, a former chief economist today wrote an article in 'The Irish Times' entitled "Killing the myth that Ireland's wealth has poisoned its values" in which he attempting to dispel the 'myth' that wealth has poisoned Irish peoples values. In response, he is most certainly correct in believing that wealth cannot 'determine' a societies derision of values, but neglects to paint a clearer understanding of how wealth and values converge. In response, it could be argued that wealth opens the door to new 'negative' value thinking as it can close the door to others. Furthermore, as I will show, some of his own comments in the article require further careful consideration. ... read full story / add a comment

Amidst the fog of war, and lack of media on the ground, it's anybody's guess as to what is actually going on there at the minute. It is claimed that Russian aircraft attacked military and other targets in Georgia (Russia denies any such attacks happened, and Georgia claims to have shot down some of the aircraft) and a large number of Russian tanks has crossed the border. Each side claims the other fired the first shot. ... read full story / add a comment

Idealists and utopians would claim that this phenomenon is the beginning of the disentanglement of the public sphere and political debate from the traditional dominance of political parties, big business, corporate media and vested interests who dictate what can and cannot be discussed, what is relevant and what is news-worthy. The political participation of the ordinary citizen could eventually be conducted entirely through electronic means. The pattern whereby citizens vote at the end of each government term with paper ballots could be replaced with a form of direct democracy. History would have turned full circle as a global village like the ancient Greek city states would decide its priorities bypassing the traditional power structure of wealth and power. But is this realistic? ... read full story / add a comment
