Racists blocking internet information about veteran two tone ska gigs. Open letter to my grandfather, Austin A. O’Malley, who I never really got to know, as he died when I was only four years old. He came over to the United States from his native country, Ireland around 1889, as a little boy of eleven years. Like many other Irishmen from Louisburg, County Mayo, he settled in Clinton, Massachusetts. I know that he worked there for a baker for awhile untill the Spanish American War broke out. I also know that he was in and out of the Veteran’s Hospital all through his life. Before departing for the US as EU Ambassador John Bruton questioned the War of Independence that saw the emergence of his party and that eventually paved the way to his becoming Taoiseach. He effectively disowned his Fine Gael Party and claimed allegiance to the defunct Irish Parliamentary or Home Rule Party that had failed to secure a subsidiary Irish parliament under the Crown. He said that having southern MPs in Westminster would have tempered British policy, seeming to forget that it had little impact on what Professor Roy Foster once called the famine “holocaust”. Indeed Bruton admitted that it resulted in the slaughter of many of the thousands of Irishmen who followed John Redmond’s lead in the First World War, as Redmond was “obliged to support imperial policy”. ... read full story / add a comment |
