The social welfare office is a bleak place to find yourself on a summer’s afternoon. It's decrepit decor of ruddy orange plastic chairs and ratty gray carpets, scarred with cigarette burns from anxious claimants testify to a lack of state investment and care . With every text and fag leaving another dent in a miserly bank balance, attempting to navigate signing on for the first time is more obstacle course than a walk in the park. ... read full story / add a comment

We have come a long way with Chavez.
But no-one ever suggested we were going to go all the way with him.

Years ago, he went from military officer, to charismatic left wing popularist, to television master, to dauphin of Castro, to the "most left wing and popular champion of the poor" in the Americas. A man who could taunt with impunity the Americans under Bush, the Mexicans under Fox. A man who could send fuel and food aid to the poor of Boston, a man who chose not to side with the striking miners of Ecuador. ... read full story / add a comment

In an analysis published last week, former CIA analyst Ray McGovern presents the high level of agreement expressed by Iraqi factions at the previous weekend's reconciliation conference in Cairo, in acknowledging the legitimacy of resistance, denouncing terrorism and demanding a timetable for the withdrawal of foreign forces. But he remains pessimistic about prospects that the Cheney-Rumsfeld cabal will take the hint, or that Condoleezza Rice will take any independent initiative within the State Department to press for withdrawal.

Meanwhile, in news reports Wednesday, although Bush maintains the pretence that he will "settle for nothing less than complete victory" - a sure recipe for complete defeat - and insists that he will not be induced to announce a deadline for withdrawal, he has nevertheless declared an intention to "decrease our troop level in Iraq". ... read full story / add a comment

It has been long observed that people for some reason on their non-banking days readily absorb shite about Dangerous Places, Famous People, Sensible Saving Options, Holidays, Interesting facts, Sport results, Media, gardening and health as well looking ahead at “opinion polls” and looking back at "how history was made".

Here are three dates-
july 27th 1968,
August 29th 1975
Nov 20th 1975

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the last "one".
It also marks the 60th anniversary of the Nuremburg trials.

The recent spate of sectarian attacks in villages in Antrim and elsewhere are obviously not a reaction to the IRA as there is no longer anything resembling a war going on. In fact they are a product of the sectarianism deeply embedded in northern society.
