On International Women's Day, it is worth reminding ourselves of the dedication of those Irish women who struggled for the women's right to vote in the early 20th century. Sometimes one gets the impression that the vote was gained through nothing more than polite lobbying. Not the case, as the following excerpt from Maria Luddy's short biography of Hanna Sheehy Skeffington (1995) shows. These women went to jail while fighting for a basic right, and today a number of women (Deirdre Clancy, Nuin Dunlop, Karen Fallon and Mary Kelly) are facing jail sentences for similar actions, taken while protesting against an immoral and unjust war. These women stand in a proud tradition of civil disobedience against injustice. ... read full story / add a comment

It has long been observed that the mass on their non banking days readily absorb shite. This is why coups are most successful on the weekend, and elections as well. It is on your non-banking days that you are presented with the most filagree woven tissues of spirit and lie, ghost and truth. It is through weekend that we have considerable space in your head. ... read full story / add a comment

At a recent debate on education held in The Fairways Hotel attended by a few hundred teachers and parents, et al - including Minister for Education, Noel Dempsey, the function of teachers as role models received heavy emphasis. Earlier this year Hugh Brady held an address that was open to students. During the A&Q period two students asked him questions about accessibility at UCD. One student who uses a wheelchair brought to his attention that not all the entrances and washrooms were accessible to her and other students that she knew. Then another student asked him about getting audio materials for those with visual impairments. To both of these questions he deflected the responsibility to the newly appoint vice-president of ‘students’ and encouraged them to lobby on the issues. ... read full story / add a comment

Despite the Minister for Education Noel Dempsey's repeated mantraof social inclusion and widening access to education, the government has systematically targeted the most disadvantaged sectors of Irish society and reneged n virtually all its election promises by introducing cutback after devastating cutback. When the [British] government abandoned its prosecution of the GCHQ whistleblower Katharine Gun, it suggested that Blair had something to hide. The prosecution offered no evidence against Ms Gun, despite her admitting that she leaked information about an American spying operation at the UN in the run-up to the war. She said she acted to try to prevent Britain illegally invading Iraq. Arrested nearly a year ago and charged eight months later under the Official Secrets Act, she is now a free woman. ... read full story / add a comment

When a publican wants to renew his license to sell intoxicating liquor we are all equally entitled to make an objection, in writing or in person to the District Court. If the same guy wanted to start, say, a salmon farm in a nearby estuary (polluting it), he would have to post notices in the papers to alert the public of his plans, who once again could try to stop him with objections and appeals. If his business involved selling lethal weapons for export to regimes which torture and kill their opponents, guess what, his license application would be dealt with in secret by Mary Harney's functionaries in the Department of Trade, Enterprise and Employment. No public scrutiny, not even parliamentary scrutiny. ... read full story / add a comment |
