Things have changed forever In the first of a two-part interview with An Phoblacht Editor SEÁN Mac BRÁDAIGH, Sinn Féin's Chief Negotiator and Mid Ulster MP Martin McGuinness explains the party's attitude to the Hain Assembly, his experience of the Assembly's Preparation for Government Committee, the prospect of government-sponsored 'hothouse' talks next month, and the likelihood of the Good Friday institutions being restored by the November deadline. ... read full story / add a comment

The conference ‘Another Europe is Possible’ being organised by Sinn Féin/GUE-NGL on Saturday next, Sept 9 in Liberty Hall will provide a welcome forum for exchange of information and debate on current developments in the EU. But one of the MEPs participating in the ‘Another Europe is Possible’ debate – Kathy Sinnott – shares the clerical-conservative views of Youth Defence and SPUC. The left should be careful not to let itself to be confused with clerical-conservatives. Beware a repeat of the 'No to Nice' campaign. ... read full story / add a comment

We're all aware of the contempt with which people with disability and their families are regarded by the state. And as if the present government were not already unpopular enough among this community of people, they have decided arbitrarily to slash the Carers Allowance which mothers of children with disability are entitled to. ... read full story / add a comment

John Donovan, a long term shareholder and critic of Royal Dutch Shell Plc management, provides an overview of a board room culture which has allowed a series of scandals to damage Shell’s once proud reputation. A culture where directors have been prepared to cook the books and have whistleblowers (Dr John Huong) and campaigners (the “Rossport Five”), terrorised and thrown in jail. Shell's reputation has been ruined due to the rapacious greed, arrogance and aggressive tactics of some Shell executives. ... read full story / add a comment

Nobody really knows how many people have died in Darfur over the last few years - certainly the number is in 100,000's. The end of this month the AU, African Union forces will withdraw and the Sudanese government promise it will replace them with its own troops - the same troops who have bombed and strafed and murdered their way through the region already - this time of course with a former rebel group who recently turned on their comrades to get concessions from Al-Bashir's regime. ... read full story / add a comment

Mr Justice Dermot Kinlen is not only a judger but also our splendid Irish republic's Inspector of Prisons. He is thus one of the few chaps who not only bangs people up but goes & has a look at them later. A pillar of the establishment. For those in the loop of Irish civil, human & other rights this last year, the recommendation by Dermot Kinlen to allow inmates in Ireland's penal community conjugal visits & rights was seen as sort of a promising thing ... read full story / add a comment

Professional sexual services for the disabled are well established in several EU states including Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark & Sweden. Their development as part of a long-term full recovery strategy & therapy for adults who had lost mobility due to accidents soon expanded to addressing questions of "how do parents of disabled children be that disability mental or physical facilitate full sexual development & maturity?" The UK first saw co-habitation of young adults with Downes Syndrome with minimal input by either parents or social services in the early 90's. And now the Swiss group "FABS" has started the ball rolling in the Alpine country to provide a "full service" which goes beyond "erotic touching" to full sexual intercourse. ... read full story / add a comment

Members of the British SWP have surprisingly come out in support of yesterdays direct action to shut down the "Drax" coal power station in England. The action was the culmination of a week of environmental workshops held on a squatted common under heavy police surveillance with around 600 people attending. The SWP of course had nothing to do with the camp or the action but it seems they may be looking to hijack the growing libertarian-environmental movement in the UK. The support for this action and the raytheon action show how the SWP, who are currently desperate for membership after seriously discrediting themselves several times over the past few years with GR, IAWM and Mayday04, are contradicting their long running opposition to direct action. ... read full story / add a comment
