Despite efforts by many around the world to rise above sectarianism in the face of the USA's raw imperialism, Walden Bello, a prominent critic of neo-liberalism, has launched an international distancing campaign against the Communist Party of the Philippines and the democratic sectoral movements which draw political inspiration from them. Claiming that the CPP's military wing has targeted him with a “hit list,” which in fact is a mere diagram showing the international linkages of various Phillipino parties and individuals, Bello is playing a dangerous game. Included on the diagram is Bello's Akbayan parlimentary party. ... read full story / add a comment

The only vaguely democratic institution in the EU, the european parliament, has repeatedly and firmly rejected software patents (or "computer implemented inventions" in Newspeak). But the European Commission and Council, spurred on by none other than our old pal McGreevy, is still trying to introduce a new law that would hand the european software industry to multinationals, mainly Microsoft and IBM, on a plate, in a sickening little "What's good for Microsoft is good for Ireland" show. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Democracy does not spring up out of the ground. The rights to equal suffrage regardless of socio-economic class, gender, or creed in a secret ballot are European rights. They have rooted in the arguments of Greek sychophants and intellectuals, who never allowed their wives, concubines, slaves or migrants the same rights. They have roots in the declaration of the rights of man of the French Revolution. ... read full story / add a comment

The last edition of UCC's student newspaper published a full page anti-gay rant, in its latest attempt to whip up Islamopohbia and homophobia As a gay student I feel very badly let down by the Students Union at UCC. If racist material had been widely distribted on campus, let alone an article in an SU funded paper whose sole purpose was to attack black people, there would at the very least have been an immediate statement of condemnation by the Student's Union. I challenge the SU leadership to deny it. ... read full story / add a comment

President Bush met President Chirac today...there is an urgent need to resolve disagreements and form strategies for peaceful resolutions worldwide. Within months, the citizens of Ireland review and vote on their choice for the EU constitution. Perhaps it is time to review our own...in the light of the Peace Process. Surely: our focus ought to be corrupt practices North and South but not make alleged criminality, at the last hurdle towards the conclusion of the Peace Process. The Gardai exist as do the PSNI let them seek out all illegal practices irrespective of origin and act with Due Process. The Tribunals about land deals are evidence....... ... read full story / add a comment

Seán’s ninth birthday is approaching and with this in mind his father Jimmy asks him if he would have any interest in watching Ireland Vs France this coming weekend in Landsdowne Rd. Sean is ecstatic at the prospect, so the following day his dad sets out to purchase a pair of tickets for the big game. To his dismay though, there is a reduced capacity in the stadium due to FIFA regulations and as a result Jimmy is unable to purchase tickets from any of the legitimate sources. For a while he wonders if he might chance his arm and negotiate a ticket from a tout prior to the match, but eventually his financial situation deems this option a non-starter. ... read full story / add a comment
