David Beggs, General Secretary of ICTU has stabbed the Anti Bin Charges Campaign in the back. Instead of opposing double taxation, Beggs has supported the bin charges. He condemns campaigners for breaking the law! If Larkin and Connolly had obeyed the law where would the Trade Union movement be today? Show him that he doesnt represent you. Contact Beggs and demand that ICTU support the Campaign and the release of Joe and Clare. The Greens: Waging Class War On Behalf Of The Rich. The Green Party stated today that it does not support the position of the Socialist Party on refusing to pay service charges. However, Green Party Leader Trevor Sargent, TD stated, “We support financial incentives and the use of reasonable volume levies to encourage waste minimisation, re-use, recycling and composting for householders and the commercial sector alike.” This gobbleiegook translates as Green Party support for a flat rate tax. It doesnt matter if you are a bin collecter or Sir Anthony O'Reilly, the Greens want you to pay the same rate of tax ... read full story / add a comment

The service charges that are being brought in north and south of the border are part of a process of further increasing the proportion of tax paid by workers. The trend in global capitalism is to replace 'progressive' taxes (like income tax) with flat-rate taxes (like VAT, service charges, etc) to further shift the taxation burden from rich to poor. This is the policy advocated by the world bank, IMF, WTO and virtually all of the institutions of global capitalism. ... read full story / add a comment

The occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan are not going according to the Whitehouse plan. A quagmire and defeat is increasingly looking to be the fate that faces imperialism. For the international working class and anti capitalist movement a victory for ther islamic fundamentalists in these countries would enormously complicate the world situation. In this statement from Labors Militant Voice we argue that the working class movement internationally should be linking with the workers movement in Iraq with the view to help is to take the leadership of the struggle to defeat the occupations and to build a new middle east free from imperialist domination and based instead on societies where the wealth is owned and utilised collectively and where decisions are made on the basis of the needs of the population and taken collectively and democratically. ... read full story / add a comment

The Greens and their allies remind me of another globally ambitious movement with committed cadres: Communists.
