The following passage may appear to be a string of non-sequiturs. That's just the punctuation. It is in fact a (slightly banal) list of reasons why people volunteer to take part in community development and other altruistic, organised and unpaid activity and work. ... read full story / add a comment

I thought this might be of interest for assorted lefts. I've written this article for a music fanzine in my own area, but it certainly has political relevance, especially for fans of the German industrial metal group. The politics of Rammstein have been debated for years, but those who I have spoken with have always been a little unsure of the actual stance of the band. Hopefully this article will go towards clearing this debate up in some ways. Any constructive criticism is appreciated. ... read full story / add a comment

Marx said that religion was the opium of the people but sport has eclipsed man's fascination with the supernatural. Football is the heroin of sport. I can remember the first time I stood with my father on a terrace and watched men chase a bag of wind around a field. I still can be found standing on those steps in all sorts of weather. ... read full story / add a comment

It has long been observed that the mediocre praise the dead and refract the vision of living folly with a mythic myopia. This weekend saw the philosopher Paul Ricoeur die peacefully in his sleep, and the Irish State really kick into its Hamilton year. Whom they term "Ireland's greatest scientist" = utter crap. In honour of Paul Ricoeur, this week's sunday papers is an attack on false memory, the Selective and Collective memory : Memory as fetishised community : Communality as fetishised memorial & I hope readers will bear with the different style as I recover from watching Star Wars episode 2 & I Robot, on DVD, and writing encylcopedia pages and blogs wonder, what has Ricoeur to offer the XXI century??? The Edukators comes bundled with enough hype and hope to prompt you into the IFI of an evening instead of lazily borrowing from your mates pirated DVD collection.
