Several polls have shown that a solid majority of Irish people oppose the occupation of Iraq by the United States and oppose the use of Shannon airport by the US military. Over 100,000 Irish people protested against this war in February 2003 in Dublin, and Irish people are even more opposed to it now. It is obvious that with a little organization and planning an enormous protest of Bush's visit to Ireland could be made, involving as many as 200,000 Irish people. This would have a significant impact on Irish and US policy, on the coming US election and on the continuation of the war in Iraq. How can this protest be avoided? How can Irish people be persuaded to stay home? How can we ensure that any action is as ineffectual and minimal as possible? ... read full story / add a comment

Corporate media reports often hide as much as they reveal. (Just what were those pesky protestors so angry about anyway?) We might expect better from the independent or left media. Sometimes we get better and sometimes we don't. Indymedia itself contains some of the best and worst elements of non-corporate news sources. In this report I decided to look at what lies behind a story contained in the latest issue of a left paper. ... read full story / add a comment

More than a year ago, we united to try and stop a War (for Oil on Iraq). And perhaps through our efforts we stopped many states from being involved in that War. We are still obliged to do our best to stop that War. More than a year ago, a war against the West became very apparant. We may all hold our opinions on the causes of that War. We are obliged to do our best to stop that War as well. I'ts called the War on Terror. We are obliged to stop the Terror. More than a generation ago, a war began in the Levant, it has touched our country, it has touched everyone. We are obliged to do our best to stop that War as well by something we call the Middle East Peace Process. ... read full story / add a comment

I have been thinking about the mayday protest for a while now, particularly the confrontation with the gardai. Yet while I can think of plenty of negative results of the black bloc's decision to try force their way through the police lines, I cant think of ONE good thing that came from it. Can anyone out there give me one reason why the day's events would have done less good if the anarchists HADN'T done that? In other words, what was the point? Can anyone give me one good result? And please, I'm not looking to start an argument -I was there too getting soaked with the watercannon, and I'm sure some of the gardai were heavy handed, AND i've nothing against anarchism but that's not the point. How in god's name did this decision contribute to the various causes we were protesting about more than it hindered them? ... read full story / add a comment
