The SP supports non-revolutionary figures like Chavez, while with-holding support from revolutionaries fighting to overthrow capitalism. This stance is contradictory. Working class unity is a utopian goal until the political and social forces that maintains sectarianism are dismantled. ... read full story / add a comment

Indymedia contributors should start to think now about how this site will report the strike called for March 30th. There is no certainty that the strike will go ahead, some deal may yet be done to avert it, but if the stoppage does go ahead we need to report it in a way that befits the occasion. A national strike would have profound significance both nationally and internationally. Up to a million people will be involved one way or the other, the world will be watching Ireland. ... read full story / add a comment

Amnesty's report on weapons used by both sides in Gaza finds much to condemn.

http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/asset/MDE15/012/2009/....html

The group is particularly hard on the U.S., having found numerous remains of American munitions -- including white phosphorus shells from Pine Bluff Arsenal, and a Hellfire missile made in Orlando.

Another weapon which bothers Amnesty is a mysterious munition, filled with cubic particles.

This type of ultra-precise strike capability is supposed to limit collateral damage and civilian casualties.

So we turn once again to Garlasco's comment, from an earlier conflict:

"It is unfortunate that these weapons are being developed specifically for use in densely populated areas which may negate the intended effect." ... read full story / add a comment

“People who got mortgages they can’t afford to pay back were greedy and foolish and should suffer the consequences…They signed a free contract, they’re adults and they have to take responsibility for their actions”. The man is in a corner, his party in a hole, the opposition lining up to take on the government’s toxic debts
and Ireland once again is in an economic shithole that was brought about by political representatives who neither knew how to spend wisely nor how to manage properly, in case of a rainy day, the state’s finances. Joe Higgins was a total gobeen for telling us that we were on a slide to disaster, while David McWilliams was criticised by everybody and anybody who proudly professed their expertise in the financial affairs of the state. ... read full story / add a comment

Dublin Bus is slated to see huge cuts in both staff and services. As many as 290 workers and 100 buses will be cut. This means fewer routes and less frequent service. If the Dublin Bus workers go on strike, it will mean an inconvenience for a few days. However, if they take action and force the company to back down, it will in the long run save us all time and money and will help the environment. It will also serve as a message to the politicians. If they want cuts, they can start by tightening the belts at the top, not the bottom. The politicians are giving bailouts to bankers while they hand out cuts to workers and commuters. It's clear where the money to support public services should come from. It should come from the people who created the crisis!
