There is a tendency to dismiss the rantings of Kevin Myers as mere guff designed to sell newspapers. However, this would be to ignore the collateral damage his phosphorous cluster bomb prose inflicts. His salvo last Friday attacking the legacy of Bob Doyle and his comrades who fought in Spain against fascism should be a call to make next Saturday's commemoration in their honour a defiant rebuttal of all Myers' and his ilk stand for. read full story / add a comment

Our government has become more and more open about their plans for us. Cowan wants to drive down our living standards 12% and has already cut all our wages through the tax levy and slashed the wages of workers in the public sector further through the so called ‘pensions levy’. He openly talks of “four more years of even steeper cuts”. He is so confident of us taking this lying down that he had the cheek to announce his intention to drive down our living standards at what even RTE referred to as the “Dublin Chamber of Commerce's lavish AGM dinner which cost €160” a head. read full story / add a comment

Cork is biting back at the recession with a new web-started community which aims to get us outside working together to grow our own food. Cork Food Web imagines a network of community gardens, allotments, urban and rural farms and food parks all over Cork city and county run autonomously by local communities and linked by the shared need to feed ourselves and mind our environment. The website is a ‘social networking site’ so allows users to create their own profile, get to know each other and form groups. In just a few months of existence membership has grown to 154, with members from the city and all across Cork county forming online interest groups, exchanging information and skills and creating events together. read full story / add a comment

Members of the Cork branch of the Workers Solidarity Movement travelled to Waterford today (2nd Feburary) to offer solidarity and support to the workers who are occupying Waterford Crystal. While there we took the opportunity to do an interview with Joe Kelly of the UNITE union and of Waterford Crystal, asking him the kind of questions that fellow workers and readers of Indymedia might be interested in. We also took some photos of a unique Waterford twist on 'canteen culture'. You can hear the interview with which we recorded here.

Last Saturday, members of the Galway Palestine Children's Appeal were "overwhelmed" by the public response to their appeal for humanitarian aid for the children and people of Gaza - expecting one 40ft container to be filled with medical supplies, household goods, non perishable food, clothes and toys, a further two had to be ordered and to ease the pressure, a request was broadcast by the local radio station, Galway Bay FM, for donors to procrastinate their visit to the drop-off point at the Black Box theatre until the delivery of the third container - this morning, at 7AM two of the stuffed containers started their journey of mercy and there is a large stockpile of aid awaiting the arrival of the third.

Including an operating table from Letterkenny Hospital, medical staff in the west donated money and supplies and businesses such as the Galway Radisson Hotel gifted 100 duvets and pillows.

I was amazed to hear that Joe the plumber is now for pyjama TV (http://www.pjtv.com/?cmd=page&page-id=111) "reporting" from Sderot on Newstalk yesterday.

I wondered what qualified him so uniquely for this position?

Perhaps its his unique skills acquired over many years as a plumber in dealing with large quantities of shit?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/01/11/joe-the-plumbe....html

According to Joe

"I don't think journalists should be anywhere around war.

I mean you guys report where our troops are at

you report what's happening day-to-day

you make a big deal out of it

I think it's assinine

I think media should be abolished from, you know, reporting" read full story / add a comment
