Death Without Context In an article search of the Irish Times archive for the period June 2005 to June 2006, the search term "Iraq lancet" gave 3 results, the last of which was printed in December 2005. A search, for the period May 2006 to June 2006, using the term "Iraq US troop" found that the number of US military casualties was reported 8 times in less than two months, only one of these reports compared these figures with Iraqi fatalities. read full story / add a comment

On the 7th of June, Peter Preston having met no satisfactory explanation for a serious assault on his daughter which caused grevious bodily harm resulting in 25 stitches to her face - undertook to refuse food in protest. One week later he took up position on Kildare street, the front entrance of the Dail (the Irish parliament). His fast has been sustained since then, & yet no-one really seems to have noticed other than the independent TD Finian Mc Grath. Maybe a person of middle age with a scarred 19 year old daughter protesting on the street is not so newsworthy. Maybe the menu at the Unicorn restaurant is more interesting. Maybe his handwritten statement was difficult to read at first. Maybe he's asking awkward questions in a manageable way. read full story / add a comment

The recent letter from a reader of the Irish Times crying foul on a political cartoon that appeared in the wake of the late Taoiseach Charles J. Haughey’s death is interesting, because it epitomises the raw emotions that surface in the face of this form of political expression. I must add that I am in no way connected to the cartoonist in question, but that I have had the benefit of media training, and I can understand the nuances that this type of visual journalism can manifest within the reader. Often a cartoonist who has done previous work with a political figure may be signing off on the figure at the time of their death. read full story / add a comment

The new Palestinian Anti-Terrorist Act passed by the US House of Representatives last month is preventing aid agencies, like Mercy Corps, delivering assistance to Palestinians already burdened by poverty and hardship. Since the Hamas victory in the elections, Israel has punished the Palestinian people by withdrawing valuable tax breaks, freezing wages to teachers, healthcare employees, policemen and other municipal workers, and by limiting entry through checkpoints that Palestinians need to access in order to be able to go to work. read full story / add a comment

For three weeks running, Vincent Browne has written at length about Charles Haughey in Village, Browne's weekly current affairs magazine. Defenders of Haughey are not hard to find of course but it’s doubtful that there can be anyone who is so clearly conflicted and contradictory as Browne has been about 'The Boss'. read full story / add a comment

This is the text of a leaflet which has been drawn up by members of the Irish National Teachers Organisation who are opposed to the new pay deal as presented to us for ratification. A version of this leaflet was distributed to approx 500 INTO delegates from all over the country who attended a 'Consultative Conference' on Whole School Evaluation last weekend. Thanks to the generosity of a number of union members a copy of it has also been posted out to most schools in the Dublin area and some around the country. Unfortunately we don't have the €1500 it would cost to send the leaflet to all 3,000 or so primary schools in Ireland. This is not a problem that will face those who favour the deal - the union leadership. They have no problem spending members' money to give the 'pro' side of the argument. If you are a member of the INTO please print off this leaflet and distribute it to your work colleagues. If you would like to contribute financially to sending out the leaflet contact me at the Email address shown. If you're not in the INTO, the information in the leaflet might be of benefit to you in your own union. Please feel free to use it as you will. read full story / add a comment

Leaders are our example and we should emulate and follow that example at all times, in this way we guarantee a future of complete destructive ‘anarchy’ for the world – ‘blessed are the liars and murderers for they have inherited the earth’! Whatever the discourse and regardless of any other consideration we will incorporate it to achieve our aims. The law and other ‘constraints’ are for the weak; we create and alter laws according to our needs. ‘Sedition’ automatically implies our ‘right’ and your ‘wrong’ – we are the trustees of 'reality', we weave the social fictions YOU live by. read full story / add a comment

The Galway Alliance Against War has claimed that attempts are being made by the authorities in Galway to stop an alternative air show being organised for Nimmo’s Pier, Claddagh at 1.30pm this Sunday. The local peace group plans to release 99 red balloons as a symbol of their opposition to what they term the “Salthill War Show”. This evening a member of the Gardaí went to the home of Niall Farrell, a member of GAAW, to inform him that the Superintendent wished to discuss “safety aspects” of the peace invent. read full story / add a comment

“If we can not know whether the courts are applying the law as passed by our legislators without editing or interference from another source our sovereignty is violated and every Act is now questionable as to its veracity. It also raises the huge question as to what subversive group has edited the legislation before it was published by the government stationery office”. In this instance where it applies to the Guardianship of Infants Act, 1964 it means that Constitutional protections given to parents very likely have been violated by the courts for the past forty years through implementation of incorrect text. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions how we can get an actual copy of the Guardianship of Infants Act, 1964 as actually passed by the Oireachtas and signed by the President from the office of the Registrar of the Supreme Court, as the enrolled text which are by Constitutional mandate held there are the only “conclusive evidence of the provisions of such law” then please tell us. read full story / add a comment

Next Tuesday 27th June in the year of our Lord 2006, UCD’s esteemed Craic Society will be hosting a fundraiser to help pay the (substantial) fines of our battle-weary believers, victims of a witch-hunt by Der College Authorities in September of last year. After organising a fun-filled outdoor piss-up on campus, these Soldiers of Craic were victimised and fined by the college authorities, who seem hell-bent on forcing us to drink overpriced warm pints of Fosters for the rest of our lives instead of being at one with nature and Buckfast. Please come and support the struggle against the neo-liberal profit-driven upper echelons of UCD . read full story / add a comment
