How was Ireland, and Galway indeed, affected by the Spanish Civil War that was raging 70 years ago? This is one of the questions that will be addressed by Bob Doyle, the last surviving Irishman to have fought for the Spanish Republic, and Harry Owens, the co-author of Bob’s biography 'Brigadista', at two meetings in Galway on Thursday 15 February. The first meeting will be held in NUI Galway at 6.15 pm under the auspices of People Before Profit, while the Galway Labour History Group will host a similar event at 7.30 pm in the Galway city library, Augustine St.

IRELAND has put off signing a UN treaty that bans governments carrying out forced disappearances and jailing people in secret.

The treaty criminalises anybody involved in the CIA secret renditions and forces countries to prosecute those involved. The US has said it will not ratify it.

Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain have also refused to sign.

They have all been associated with the CIA’s kidnapping of terror suspects and with Ireland will be named in a European Parliament report tomorrow. read full story / add a comment

Following the preliminary decision of the Environmental Protection Agency to grant a licence to Shell for a gas terminal at Bellanaboy, now follows the news that Shell has sought what are termed 'pre-application discussions' under the new Strategic Infrastructure Act to clarify procedures for lodging an application : This Act came into force at the end of January and Shell lodged its application for talks just days later on 8 February and "it is understood the impact of the new act is that any pipeline from the shoreline to any terminal requires the sole permission of An Bord Pleanála" (RTE news)

History was made today as the GAA opened its doors and welcomed in a modern Ireland for all to enjoy.

John Howard, known internationally as a Bush lackey, shameless coward, racist and abandoner of Australian citizens in trouble, today levelled a criticism at U.S. Presidential candidate, Barak Obama. The ‘aluminium tubing’ Prime Minister stated that Obama’s Iraq policy would “completely destabilise and destroy Iraq”. Howard seems ‘completely’ oblivious to the FACT that his participation in the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq has ALREADY COMPLETELY DESTABILISED AND DESTROYED Iraq! read full story / add a comment

Integrated ticketing is a most desirable move forward in helping public transport users move from one form of public transport to another with relative ease, if only it was as easy as that. Providing an actual operational and successful integrated ticketing system such as those seen on the continent, while desirable is but the final process once we have resolved the various other issues that inhibit the successful introduction of the system. read full story / add a comment

The ever increasing, unmentionable death toll of U.S. military expansionism in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and elsewhere exceeds one million souls. The human casualties have achieved unification and consensus at last! The slogan of death is unutterable, perfectly silent and devastatingly effective! Devoid of tribe, nation, race, religion and every other divisive factor that contributed to their demise, all humans are united in death – they are finished! In death there are no ideologies, 'critical issues' or causes. read full story / add a comment
