The decision of the government to guarantee the liabilities, the debt and deposits, of the Irish banks has been described by the Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore as the ‘biggest blank cheque in history’. The guarantee amounts to around €400bn and will be nearer €500bn if non-Irish owned banks such as the Ulster Bank are included.

Beyond the nature of the decision and its suddenness, the sheer scale of this guarantee has been staggering. The US bail-out plan which was initially rejected by Congress was claimed to cost $700bn. In other words the Irish guarantee could grow almost to the size of the US bail out while the US economy is almost seventy times larger! read full story / add a comment

A recent BBC TV programme called: "High Anxieties: The Mathematics of Chaos" documented how mathematics has come to better understand the instability in complex system, such as our economy and our climate. Our attempts to predict and control such unstable systems are unsuccessful, as illustrated by the ongoing finance and market crisis. We face much the same sort of unpredictable development with the climate, and for the same reason, a sudden, potentially irreversible, change cannot be ruled out. The unstable and unsustainable economy is now driving climate instability. Our first task is to stabilize our economy, change its purposes, move to sustainability and try to avert the worst effects of climate change. read full story / add a comment

The next three months will be vital in the Middle-East. With the US election in the offing it is becoming more rather than less likely that there will be an attack on Iran. Hands off People of Iran (HOPI) is an anti-war campaign that supports the people of Iran not Ahmadinejad’s regime.

HOPI has therefore organised a series of events in Dublin from 13-15 November to draw attention to the situation and to build support for the campaign. We will have two important speakers attending:

Yassamine Mather, leading Iranian political activist who is in touch with students and other oppositional groups in Iran

Moshe Machover, Israeli socialist and opponent of the Israel government with a long history in the anti-Zionist movement. read full story / add a comment
