Hands off People of Iran – Iranian and Israeli dissidents visit Dublin 13-15 November‏

category international | anti-war / imperialism | press release author Wednesday October 29, 2008 17:01author by pat c - Hands off the People of Iran Report this post to the editors

The next three months will be vital in the Middle-East. With the US election in the offing it is becoming more rather than less likely that there will be an attack on Iran. Hands off People of Iran (HOPI) is an anti-war campaign that supports the people of Iran not Ahmadinejad’s regime.

HOPI has therefore organised a series of events in Dublin from 13-15 November to draw attention to the situation and to build support for the campaign. We will have two important speakers attending:

Yassamine Mather, leading Iranian political activist who is in touch with students and other oppositional groups in Iran

Moshe Machover, Israeli socialist and opponent of the Israel government with a long history in the anti-Zionist movement.

Quotes from Yassamine Mather

‘Over the last few weeks French president Nicolas Sarkozy has publicly suggested on at least three occasions that an Israeli attack might be imminent - and acceptable - unless Iran quits enriching uranium, and implied that in such an event the international community should turn a blind eye. In early October French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner said Israel was expected to launch a military strike on Iran before Tehran acquires a nuclear bomb.

Inside Iran, radical students and young workers are horrified by the thought of war. They are against the theocratic regime and are fighting it and getting arrested and imprisoned on a daily basis. But they are also against any invasion and point to the example of Iraq to show the results of US intervention. They want support from democrats and the working class throughout the world, not George Bush or whoever takes over from him’.

We have organised the following events:

Thursday 13 November 7.30pm, Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square Dublin 1

Debate on the Middle-East jointly organised with the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign

Speakers:
Moshe Machover,
Raymond Deane, Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign
Yassamine Mather,

Saturday 15 November, 12.30pm Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square Dublin 1

HOPI Ireland founding conference

Join us in debate and decisions on the way forward for this vital campaign. We will be joined by Yassamine Mather and Moshe Machover and hear messages from Iranian students and trade unionists in struggle in Iran. Find out what is really going on behind the scenes.

Other events

Meetings will be held in Trinity College and UCD as well as community meetings and other events.
