"One Big Tribe" May 1st 2003 marks forty years of the Indonesian occupation of West Papua.West Papua was handed over in the 60's through a seriously flawed so called de-colonistaion process by the Dutch, Americans, British and the UN. The country has been ravaged, polluted and pillaged by the Indonesian government, multi-national corporations and worldwide inaction ever since. read full story / add a comment

The Iraqi Foreign Minister, Naji Sabri, is in Cairo to appeal for Arab support in resisting the American-led invasion. He is taking part in a meeting of Arab foreign ministers in the Egyptian capital during which they will try to hammer out a foreign position on Iraq. The ministers may have trouble reaching a common position because the Arab world is split down the middle. Although most Arab people are angry about the American-led attack, some Arab governments are opposed, openly or in private, to Saddam Hussein. They are unlikely to support a common statement from the Arab League that condemns the Americans. read full story / add a comment

Seemingly, at least, everything is very simple and nice. First, Israel displayed perfect loyalty to the U.S., which presumably will pay it back in economic and political coin. Second, Israel haters, led by France, have lined up with America's rivals, and Washington, presumably, will pay them back. The cold wind blowing from Iraq toward the four-sided forum will yank the road map out of the Quartet's hands and momentously return it to Washington. Third, President Bush has sent the UN into rehab, which is something that the disciples of Israel's "UN is irrelevant" camp always like to gloat over. Jerusalem should not derive satisfaction from the American decision to ignore the UN. Under the cover of the automatic American veto, Israel has held onto territory it does not own for the last 36 years. Either way, if the battle cheer of the Israeli right isn't exaggerated, it is certainly premature. read full story / add a comment

34 die as US missiles hit wrong target Luke Harding in Halabja, northern Iraq Monday March 24, 2003 The last thing that Omar Mohammed Saeed heard was the sound of the American missile plunging through the roof of his dormitory. It was 12.30 at night, and Mr Saeed and his fellow peshmerga fighters had been fast asleep. The laser-guided bomb reduced the compound where Mr Saeed had been staying into a tomb of pulverised concrete and metal. There was no chance of escape. "We don't understand. Why did America do this? My uncle was a kind man who would never have hurt anybody," his nephew, Sadar Mohammed, said yesterday. "This makes us love Saddam Hussein rather than America," he added. read full story / add a comment

Members of the radical pacifist Catholic Worker movement are presently occupying offices of the Aviation Building. The anti-war activists have refused to leave the building in protest at the continued use of Shannon Airport by the U.S.military. A spokesperson for the group stated: "The civilian infrastructure of the Irish aviation industry has been surrendered by the Ahern government to the U.S.war machine, a war machine that continues to unleash indiscrimminate bombardment, napalm, cluster bombs and cruise missiles on the people of Iraq. Like the train tracks that lead to the town of Auschwitz, Shannon Airport has been militarised on an assembly line of death. In the name of the children of Iraq, we call upon the Irish government to desist. We call upon the Irish people to nonviolently resist the criminal complicity of the Ahern/Harney government. "Until recently, leftist movements were set up in hierarchical fashion, around a party or a mass movement type group. Today, the model in vogue is the network, a kind of "(dis)organization" which "does not possess a hierarchical structure nor a headquarters," counting only on "nodes" in whose intercessions are united "horizontally" hundreds and thousands of protest groups...However they are not invincible and have their Achilles heel.
