The World Bank is coming to Dublin on Monday November 12th and Tuesday November 13th. This provides us with a huge opportunity to highlight our massive concerns about Ireland’s engagement with this influential institution. Join our Photo Stunt! Sunday November 11th, 11.30am, Dáil Eireann, Kildare Street, Dublin 1 We want to send our message loud and clear to Finance Minister Brian Cowen that Ireland’s aid should not be supporting World Bank economic conditions. So join us at 11.30am on Sunday 11th November, outside Dáil Eireann on Kildare Street and help us create a photograph for the media. We want to create a picture that involves us shouting our message into Brian Cowen’s ear. Please come wearing a suit (jacket, trousers, tie), as we want to make a scene of many Minister Cowens that will look eye catching for the media. This action is being organised by Debt and Development Coalition Ireland, Comhlámh, Latin America Solidarity Centre and Trócaire. read full story / add a comment

And that goes for you too, so, Irish friends: have a referendum! Because: "The European Commission is to put forward, tomorrow Tuesday 6 November, a proposal to collect personal data (PNR) on everyone flying in and out of the EU." Without informing 99% of the 490 million people in the 27 EU countries, a NO FLY control list is slyly shoved down their throat by the EU profiteers. read full story / add a comment

Heard about this new idea called “animal rights”? Sure, you say, heard about that idea years ago; groups of people against cruel animal experiments, circuses and fur shops. Aren’t these the people who claim that animal testing is wrong because it does not work? All that is true: but permit me to introduce you to a relatively new idea about nonhuman animals and their rights. read full story / add a comment

In the article blow Mark Fischer of the Weekly Worker interviews Iranian Socialist Yassamine Mather on the events which took place at the STWC conference. How do you evaluate the development of Hands Off the People of Iran so far? The idea for such a campaign has been floating around in left Iranian exile circles for some time before concrete steps were taken about nine months ago. Its progress in that relatively short space of time seems to have been pretty rapid. It has been very rapid progress. I was initially very surprised at the level of support we picked up. This has manifested itself not simply in the ‘soft’ form of people signing the founding statement, but with many people coming forward over the past few weeks to publicly associate their names with our protests against Stop the War Coalition exclusions. read full story / add a comment

According to Concern and other international and national NGOs, there is an unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in South Central Somalia. Tens of thousands of people are currently fleeing violence in Mogadishu adding to the up to 335,000 people already needing immediate lifesaving assistance in Mogadishu and the Shabelle regions. NGOs cannot respond effectively to the crisis because access and security are deteriorating dramatically at a time when needs are increasing. The international community and all involved parties have a responsibility to protect civilians, to allow the delivery of aid and to respect humanitarian space and the safety of humanitarian workers. read full story / add a comment

On 1 October 2007, the Weston Gardens Residents' Association, of which I am Cathaoirleach, sent a letter by registered post to Brendan Kenny (CEO Limerick Regeneration Agencies). When Mr. Kenny did not respond after 3 weeks, we decided to go public. On 24 October 2007, we bought a full page in the Limerick Leader and published a shortened version . The Minister for Education Catroina Ruane has stated publicly that the current offer on the table to settle the Classroom Assistants dispute is valued at £45 million. This is in direct contradiction to the statements by the Education Boards that the offer is valued at £40.2 million. These opposing statement have caused great confusion amongst parents and staff. NIPSA is calling for transparency in the job evaluation process and demanding access to the costings for the job evaluation process. read full story / add a comment

I cam across this tale whilst having coffee in leafy D4, in the Baggot Street area and this tied in with something that I had heard a few weeks ago in that Palace of Epicurian Delights the Embassy Grill in Ballsbridge.
