Trade unionists and anti-capitalists mobilize in solidarity with longshore workers BY SHAWN WHITNEY. www.counterpunch.org was a great site for alternative US views around War in Afganistan and around 911. They have a 911 anniversary special on the front page right now with lots of interesting and provocative comment on the issues around 911. Sure beats the wall to wall TV infotainment being dished out at present which seems, when looked at as a whole, like nothing less than a strategy to instill a pavlovian response in audiences linking Iraq and 911 in their minds. But . . . . there is no link between the two. read full story / add a comment

A new opinion poll suggests that the result of the Nice Treaty referendum is too close to predict, with a very high percentage of people saying they do not know how they will vote. The poll, carried out by Millward Brown IMS for the international bank Citigroup, was conducted among a nationwide sample of 1,000 voters and concluded last Thursday. It found that 29% intended to vote Yes, 19% said they would vote No, 9% would not vote and 44% said they did not know how they would vote. With such a high proportion of the sample undecided, the result was considered too close to call. Eighteen per cent of men but just 4% of women were in favour of the Treaty. The age range most strongly in favour of Nice was the over 65s, with 26% saying they would vote Yes. read full story / add a comment

The use of the racist "N" word by Enda Kenny leader of the Fine Gael party recalls the Fascist origins of this political party. The use of such a derogatory term heightens racial tension at a time when people have been beaten to death on Ireland's streets because of the colour of their skin. That RTE complied with Kenny's request and refused to report the story puts into serious doubt the national broadcasting entity's professionalism. If Kenny continues as leader it means that Fine Gael is being true to its Fascist origins and should be treated as a pariah. read full story / add a comment
