category national | miscellaneous | news report author Sunday September 08, 2002 20:33author by Blisset (slight return) Report this post to the editors

Was handed a flyer about this at weekend - Irish artists are an obedient lot - except these I spose

Informal meetings of Artists for Change EACH Saturday 7-9pm in the upstairs library, KAFFEMOKA, sOUTH wILLIAM sTREET - FORM AN ACTIVE AUTONOMOUS ARTISTS' STRUCTURE - FILL IN THE SPACE - OPPOSE ANY GROUP INSTITUTION OR BOARD THAT DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY DISCRIMINATES AGAINST OR OPPRESSES ANY PERSON

What's the point here? Conservative politicians and lobby groups have for years being calling for State funding of the arts to be cut. If you love the free market, and think that artists will gain their freedom through Disney, this sounds like a meeting for you.

It's a duty of the state to tax wealth - and it's their duty to support artists, to allow them to "step outside" the market economy and be relieved from commercial pressures. The crass corporate commercial culture is taxed - and the fruits of that taxation pay for genuine art.

I agree - but surely the solution is changing the allocation system, not taking the Thatcher approach to arts? I don't think this platform has been thought through properly. No state funding is a quick fix solution that will be detrimental to the arts in the long run.

Sounds like a vocal installation piece!
Why can't Artists in Ireland not just get on with it like all other freethinkers Use The fucking SPACE! (streets,pavements,scaffolding,rivers,trees,buildings,their homes jesus the list is endless!}
