Was handed a flyer about this at weekend - Irish artists are an obedient lot - except these I spose Informal meetings of Artists for Change EACH Saturday 7-9pm in the upstairs library, KAFFEMOKA, sOUTH wILLIAM sTREET - FORM AN ACTIVE AUTONOMOUS ARTISTS' STRUCTURE - FILL IN THE SPACE - OPPOSE ANY GROUP INSTITUTION OR BOARD THAT DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY DISCRIMINATES AGAINST OR OPPRESSES ANY PERSON

I agree - but surely the solution is changing the allocation system, not taking the Thatcher approach to arts? I don't think this platform has been thought through properly. No state funding is a quick fix solution that will be detrimental to the arts in the long run.
What's the point here? Conservative politicians and lobby groups have for years being calling for State funding of the arts to be cut. If you love the free market, and think that artists will gain their freedom through Disney, this sounds like a meeting for you.
It's a duty of the state to tax wealth - and it's their duty to support artists, to allow them to "step outside" the market economy and be relieved from commercial pressures. The crass corporate commercial culture is taxed - and the fruits of that taxation pay for genuine art.
