The March/April issue of the magazine History Ireland contains a major article on Irish anarchists in the late nineteenth-century that should be of interest to today's anarchist activists.

The title is '"Practical anarchists, we": social revolutionaries in Dublin, 1885-7'

In Ireland and Britain in the 1880s, the Fenians occupied the demonic role of 'terrorists' in the recesses of the bourgeois mind, and less attention was paid to terrorists of the radical left. Historian Fintan Lane relates how anarchists, though scarcely noticed, were nevertheless active in Ireland and argued openly for social revolution, though not for 'individual terror'.

A 68 year old pensioner from Cabra is been brought to court by Dublin City Council for putting rubbish into the back of a bin truck. DCC are seeking substantial legal costs off this pensioner if he loses his case. The local anti-bin tax campaign, comprising Cabra/Dunard/Navan Rd. and the Dublin anti-bin tax campaign are fully supporting this pensioner. We have organised a fundraising pub-quiz on the 11th April in Eamonn McGraths pub, Fassaugh Avenue, Cabra. Any support will be appreciated.

Dublin is the first city in Ireland to embrace the spirit of the global campaign of Earth Hour 2008. The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Paddy Bourke (Labour) has been instrumental in gaining the support of city council representatives to endorse the campaign. Speaking about the Earth Hour campaign he said “I am thrilled that as Dublin Lord Mayor, I will be leading our capital city in its I would urge businesses and homes to join in and take part in the campaign.”, this campaign is important and everyone from citizens up to Government has a duty to do what they can against global warming. It is up to us all to do what we can to reduce our CO2 emissions. Through one simple action, turning off our lights for an hour, we can deliver a powerful message about the need for action.” read full story / add a comment

The old adage ‘You can fool some people some times, but you can’t fool all the people all the time’ comes to mind when summing up Provisional Sinn Fein’s ‘grass roots’. At what point will they stop being fooled and maybe step back and question the honesty and integrity of their party leader Gerry Adams ? Having once been a supporter and admirer of Adams I now find it difficult to listen to him. He was interviewed by Ursula Halligan on TV3’s The Political Party on Sunday, March 2nd . I have not read any comments regarding this interview on any of the usual sites where this might be debated or discussed. The first part of the interview was taken up with how Sinn Fein got it so wrong in the 26 counties Elections and what direction they where now taking etc etc. Ursula then went on to ask Adams…………

Two intellectually lazy revisionist views have gained ground in the popular Irish historical mythology in relation to the Easter Rising.

1) That the Easter Rising was a a deliberate romantic blood sacrifice by rebels who knew in advance that they would fail.

2) That the Easter Rising was a terrorist act. read full story / add a comment
