To Precede this 'Opinon and Analysis' on the Constitutional crisis of May and June 2006 and right up to this election, I want to state that the statute which came about as a result of emergency legislation equally mitigates against the 12-17 year old pre-consent boy; but the sub-title of the piece is focussed on the creation of an under-class. The collapse of the 1935 legislation which came about as a direct result of the Laffoy Judgement on the 'A' case led to the introduction of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Bill 2006, (amended 2007), this included the insertion of the unconstitutional section 5 into the statute, which still stands , without repeal and without re-visit. read full story / add a comment

The uninformed are rejoicing over the forced resignation of Paul (bouquet of flowers) Wolfowitz from the World (US) Bank; the resignation of Tony (45 minutes) Blair as British prime minister; the foregone demise of George (WMD, mission accomplished) Bush and the likely elimination of John (aluminium tubing) Howard as Australian prime minister. However, rejoicing may be premature as the gangrenous infection in the body of humanity has not been completely excised. read full story / add a comment

Please come to Shannon tomorrow 19 May 2007, or any other day of your choice, to protest against the human rights abuses being facilitated on a daily basis at Shannon airport. In January 2006, I formally requested the Irish Human Rights Commission to investigate the use of Shannon airport for the purposes of facilitating the US Rendition for Torture programme and the transit of US troops to unlawful wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. On 17 May 2007, 17 months later, I received a reply from the IHRC saying that they had decided not to investigate any of the issues I had raised with then. The IHRC has just decided that it "was not EXPEDIENT to investigate torture and for the abuse of Shannon airport to facilitate the US war against the peoples of Iraq and Afghanistan. I call on all the Human Rights Commissioners to resign from the Commission because of your failure to investigate the abuses of Shannon airport and Irish territory for the purposes of committing and facilitating gross human rights abuses. read full story / add a comment

Anne McShane gives a report here on how meetings in Cork, Dublin and Belfast resulted in the succesful launch of Hands Off the People of Iran, in Ireland. Full article and links to more material at the url below. pat c Genuine solidarity The launch of the Hands off the People of Iran campaign in Ireland last week was an important success. It showed the potential of Hopi to draw others in and give real solidarity to left and progressive forces in Iran. Yassamine Mather put forward forceful arguments against many misconceptions. She explained the political realities in Iran and the struggles that are ongoing against the theocratic regime. She argued against the idea that the development of nuclear power by Iran was the impetus behind any US intervention. The true reason is that the Iranian state is far too influential in Iraq for the liking of the Bush administration. read full story / add a comment

Yet more bad news if you're a serviceman or servicewoman with the US armed forces. The Pentagon have drawn up a list of sites which their employees will no longer be allowed access from company computers. Though facing off advocates of freedom on the web, the Pentagon were quick to clarify the ban will only apply to US base computers. A regular soldier or officer in Iraq or Afghanistan will still be free to log on to the "banned list" from any internet café they can find in Baghdad or Kabul that are still occupier friendly. The news is sure to overshadow the other little titbits of news from the hive this wednesday evening ; Sarkozy's wife didn't vote in the second round and wants a divorce & Prince Harry of the half-blood Windsor is not afterall to be allowed join his regiment of squaddies in Iraq or active service. Too many threats - too much danger. read full story / add a comment

Human Rights Watch provides an update on the Iranian Juntas war on women. This puts things in the context of human, civil and gender rights. Iran’s arbitrary arrests of thousands of men and women in recent weeks under the banner of “countering immoral behavior” threaten basic rights to privacy, Human Rights Watch said today. Human Rights Watch called for the immediate release of all those detained as part of this campaign, including more than 80 people seized in a raid on a private gathering in the city of Esfahan on May 10, 2007. read full story / add a comment
