The US occupation has damaged Iraqi civil society and infrastructure, fuelled terrorism and was carried out in the interest of capitalists rather than the Iraqi people. American capitalism has used the occupation to suppress workers rights and steal the natural resources of the country. Before the US invaded there weren’t any Islamist terrorist groups of any note in Iraq. Now there are, thus the secular nature of Iraqi society has declined under the occupation as secular forces are squashed between the Islamists and the US forces. read full story / add a comment

As governer of Texas George Bush, (the current supreme wookie of the fundamentalist churches in schism with those of Europe, Kiev, Ethiopia and the Lebanon) executed more prisoners than any other man entrusted with the death sentance in US history. The news that he has flown home to rush legislation through Congress to stop the withdrawl of medical assistance to a woman in a persistent vegetative state, could be understood to mean HE IS LOOKING FOR FORGIVENESS. or maybe not... read full story / add a comment

On Tuesday, 25 April 1915, about 600 poorly-trained & poorly-armed young people reported for duty in the Athenry / Oranmore / Gort district of Co Galway. It was the only major mobilisation of the 1916 rebellion outside of Dublin. Who were these young people & what did they hope to achieve? Answers to these and other questions will by provided by Fergus Campbell, author of a new book entitled 'Land & Revolution: Nationalist Politics in the West of Ireland, 1891-1921', recently published by Oxford University Press. Admission is free to the lecture, which is hosted by the Galway Labour History Group, and all are welcome read full story / add a comment

The mental health organisation Aware received 90, 490 euros in donations for the year 2003. They refuse to say how much of this money came from individuals with links or associations to pharmaceutical companies promoting the theory that depression is a real disease related to a brain chemical imbalance. It's important to note that these donations are separate from D.A.W.N donations, etc, and no breakdown is given. read full story / add a comment

An Online petition has been set up as part of a campaign against the Criminal Justice Bill. If introduced it will allow for the gardai to issue on the spot fines for whatever reason they deem fit and the only evidence that he or she needs in support is his or her subjective opinion that that person is in breach of the law. The person will have to pay up within a certain time period regardless of whether they are guilty or not. read full story / add a comment

The EU's REACH proposal for improved regulation of chemicals has sparked the largest ever industry lobbying campaign in Europe. The chemical industry council CEFIC took the lead, with German giant BASF in a key role, and with active backing from US chemical corporations and the Bush administration. Scare mongering, flawed impact studies and delay tactics are part of this aggressive counter-campaign that has seriously weakened REACH. More than ever, it is time for citizens to stand up against industry attempts to undermine progressive environment and health legislation.
