We can speculate on alternative scenarios that may have arose if Hitler had won WW2 or JFK had not been shot in Dallas or Cantona had not attacked a spectator with a kung fu kick. But the most important question we must speculate about is the great "what if" of our times. "What if Al Gore had won the US Presidential Election in 2000?" This is what I think might have happened: read full story / add a comment

While America leads the world in insularism and denial, Australia is the world leader in complacency and apathy. No cultural equivalent for the Oz expression, “she’ll be right, mate”, exists anywhere – notwithstanding the variation of “who gives a shit?” Today, non-involvement is proving to be a very costly cultural habit. America has become the world’s most hated nation and will soon attract very real consequences for its actions, one of which is the acquisition of Australia as a colonial trophy. Australia remains an international laughing stock under the servile leadership of lackey prime minister, John Howard; Aussies are experiencing their eleventh year under the rule of the most slavish, gutless, lying, duplicitous, cringing, government on record. No other leader in world history has displayed the servility and cowardice of John Howard. When America says jump, the despicable little coward, Howard, says how high, boss! read full story / add a comment

Survivors of Bhopal Gas Disaster, the world's worst industrial disaster, are again on hunger strike in India in search of justice, more than 22 years after the gas leak. The hostile local government refuses to budge on their demands, which include access to clean and non-poisonous drinking water, proper health care and economic rehabilitation. This morning, on the 13th day of their hunger strike, the police swooped down early in the morning with the intention of taking them to hospital and force-feeding them. read full story / add a comment

Brian Cowen once said that Bertie Ahern was man disinterested in material wealth; a Man of the People - a pint of Bass - and a chat with the Dublin people in relation to how the Dublin people are doing in the Championship. The last Socialist, he called himself but now we all know, to the contrary of our lives and our civil liberties, that this is not the case. read full story / add a comment

The world is in a state of chasis as Sean O'Casey might say. Since the advent of George Bush to the White House every other year seems to bring forth a war or talk of war. Few commentators believe that this will stop at Iraq. Last July even Newt Gingrich was quoted as saying that "we are in the early stages of what I would describe as the third world war..."(1) Many people are now openly speculating about who is next. Syria? North Korea? Saudi Arabia? And especially Iran are the subject of fevered speculation even in the established media. This writer would just like to opt for Russia as the next ultimate target. read full story / add a comment

Islamist militants and terrorist groups pose a particular danger to Iraqi women. Many women’s organizations and activists inside Iraq have documented the increasing Islamist threats to women: the pressure to conform to certain dress codes, the restrictions in movement and behaviour, incidents of acid thrown into women’s faces and even targeted killings. After the U.S. invasion in 2003, many women in Basra, for example, reported that they were forced to wear a headscarf or restrict their movements in fear of harassment from men. Female students at the University of Basra reported that since the war ended groups of men began stopping them at the university gates, shouting at them if their heads were not covered read full story / add a comment

Writers in Ireland are campaigning for a boycott of Russian Xenophobe politician Georgy Pryakhin, noted for his anti-Semitism and race hatred. Commenting on the proposed visit by the Russian parliamentarian, Russian-Irish writer Anatoly Kudryavitsky said " This man is a dangerous extremist masquerading as a writer, and should be exposed as a hate-monger." read full story / add a comment |
