It is not the reformists' promise of freedom of expression and association that the Iranian working class rejected in the presidential election this year. What they refused to tolerate any longer is deteriorating economic conditions that neoliberalism brought them. "Mr. [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad, who catapulted to president-elect from near obscurity as the appointed mayor of Tehran, campaigned on a populist message, promising to redistribute the nation's wealth, hold down prices, raise salaries and lift state-supported benefits for the poor." read full story / add a comment

Ahern does not feel pressure over aid

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has said he does not feel under any additional pressure to raise Ireland's level of overseas aid in the wake of the weekend's Live 8 concerts.

Mr Ahern said it was not possible to raise it from €600 million to €1.4 billion as he would not be able to explain such an increase to the Irish people.

Mr Ahern made his comments after a meeting in Dublin with the Canadian Prime Minister, Paul Martin.

The so-called riots in Edinburgh yesterday were hyped out of proportion. It is the tactics of the police to intimidate people from protesting tomorrow at the summit. A protest picket has been organised for Wednesday 6 July at 5pm outside the Falls Road Shell Garage (opposite Beechmount Leisure Centre) in Belfast.

It is vital that people across the country show both the Dublin Government and the multinationals that our national resources are not for sale and that we will not tolerate the endangering of our environment and peoples safety for the private profit of a few fat cats.
