Gary and I shared many a police cell in the '70's & '80's and many a backyard barbie in the '90's and norties. In '77 Gary brought his experiences from the north of Ireland to our movement in sunny redneck facist Queensland that resisted the state suspension of civil liberties (3,000+ arrests '77-81 for merely marching, leafleting picketing, gathering publicly in groups of more than 3 people..Nuts?....you had to be there!) read full story / add a comment

After a hungerstrike which lasted 76 days, the Anarchist prisoner Amadeu Casellas won his demands for the privileges he had been denied, supervised freedom under the 3rdº degree, which iwill allow him two 48 hour passes followed by work outside of prison only to return to sleep. The reports publicised by the Catalan ministry of Justice early yesterday evening that he had abandoned his protest were finally qualified at 10pm last night by his lawyer that he had in fact won his demands & that the solidarity campaign will continue to highlight his case with protest actions today to support a visit by his mother & a parliamentary representative. read full story / add a comment

Amy Goodman outlines the real reasons for her arrest and how it follows a pattern of intimidating independent reporters. Full text at link. Government crackdowns on journalists are a true threat to democracy. As the Republican National Convention meets in St. Paul, Minn., this week, police are systematically targeting journalists. I was arrested with my two colleagues, “Democracy Now!” producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar, while reporting on the first day of the RNC. I have been wrongly charged with a misdemeanor. My co-workers, who were simply reporting, may be charged with felony riot. read full story / add a comment

Jim Moody of the CPGB writes on the likely effects of a ‘pre-emptive’ strike on Irans Natanz fuel enrichment plant. Full text at link. No nuclear explosion, when delivered by bomb or missile, could be contained underground - especially one so large as to ensure complete destruction of Iran’s nuclear facilities within mountain tunnels, as well as its earth and concrete protected structures below ground. This is not akin to an underground nuclear test, where containment can be achieved. read full story / add a comment

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere even though Haiti was the second country to get independence (the first black republic) with the USA being the first. Since then Haiti has never really progressed compared to the countries surrounding her. Haiti shares an island with the Dominican Republic and the difference between the two countries is extraordinary. Haiti has 300,000 street children. Over 42% of the Haitien population is under the age of 14 and the country has an unemployed rate of over 70%. The life expectancy of men and women is in now in their late forties. The average salary would be around 2 US dollars a day and now a large sack of rice is around 40 US dollars this having increased from 27 US dollars only since the beginning of 2007. read full story / add a comment

The Minister has made a career out of stating the obvious but this time he has surpassed himself. While he accepts that the increased fuel bills are causing concern, the Minister then states that his colleague Mary Hanafin is monitoring the impact on pensioners. In fact there is no need to monitor anything – the price rises in both gas and electricity and in the basic cost of a bag of coal are breath-taking and will force many pensioners to go without adequate warmth this winter. A bag of coal is now eighteen euro. read full story / add a comment

The kid (who can't be named for "protective" reasons) had been arrested at a children's home where he alledgedly had been drinking vodka.
