The tree walk crew is gathering to bring about a journey form the source of the Shannon to the ocean. We will be canoing,carrying all we need,camping out,linking up river communites,using human power,travelling an ancient route,free of cars,full of life. We will be planting native broadleaf trees,heratige apple trees and hope . the Shannon inspires many,nurtures and has and will be a source of energy and water for us all far into the future. On October 14th/15th06 there will be a kyayk building workshop.these boats will carry us on our journey.they will be made from local sourced wood and materials,under the guidance of a traditional boat builder. over the weekend we will work, cook, and rest together.there will be a cahnce to become informed about the journey,the treewalk's and share our ideas and visions for such an undertaking. read full story / add a comment

Just a quick note to say that while holidaying in Italy 2 weeks ago i picked up a copy of the "International Herald Tribune" which contained an article about Shell's persistant illegal over charging in the European Bitiumen(road dressing) market. A number of oil companies were fined but Shell received by far the largest one for its particualry bad record on the matter read full story / add a comment

A temporary public art project in Leighlinbridge (County Carlow) by Dublin-based artist Glenn Loughran. Working with the local community , the project commenced by collectively building a school-house using straw-bale eco-building techniques. This space then became the site of an education exchange between the artist and a group of local young people - touching on isses of identity, community, class, race and post-colonialism, delivered to the young people through the metaphor of “The Neighbour”. The project concludes on the 7th of October with a public exhibition. read full story / add a comment

All I feel at this time is about the adage ' walking in the moccasins' of another. Do many of us really remember the 1980's? I do. I emigrated with my then husband to England (we hadn't the qualifications for the US. Both he and I worked in the building industry, for large companies - M.F.N. (liquiddation) but one of the big 9 in the 1970's. Then the Gallagher's Abbey. It was rough one day to see all staff lose their jobs as the construction marketed faltered further in the early 1980's. Land banks existed but planning permission for sites in places like Yellow Walls in Portmarnock were at log jam as Governments changed. I am forever grateful to people like Michael O'Leary and their foresight for Ryanair. It meant we had left Ireland but it was possible to come home and frequently. We brought new friends home. This would not have been possible in the Monopolised Aer Lingus challenged by O'Leary. read full story / add a comment

Where is the integration in policy..........Who understands and who really cares? The areas include social, community, education, health, the thread runs through society......even to the mentality of people driving cars and flying planes.....Yes, the big one is Stress - Anxiety - and Depression it is said 25 % of people killed in RTA's are in fact Suicides. Let's get real. Integration, co-operation, rehabilitative disciplines and teams to work on say people with mental health and neurological provlsion complicated by Chronic Fatigue syndrome while at the same time ensure that people are sufficiently alert and aware to physical conditions like cancer... Nineteen Nigerian men have been hunger-striking in the Westwood Court hostel in Tralee Town centre for a period of two weeks. local reports say that the hunger-strike was postponed at one stage but is back on. The Kerryman and the Kingdom have published interviews with the men over the period. read full story / add a comment

The Western Writers' Centre website at www.twwc.ie welcomes stories and poems for publication in English, French as well as Irish. Already the site carries a number of works from around the globe; but manager Fred Johnston, who himself translates stories and poems from French into English and received a Prix de l'Ambassade to work on the poetry of Michel Martin, would like to see the actual languages change. read full story / add a comment

I shouldn’t be so harsh on the Americans; it took me years to discover I had a nose on my face but I was at a disadvantage, there is only one of me. Imagine the cost (tax payer’s money) involved in maintaining not one bloated ‘intelligence’ agency, but sixteen! After a period of three years, sixteen U.S. intelligence agencies have finally determined the sky is blue, people have noses on their faces and that the illegal Iraq intervention increased the ‘terrorist’ threat – bravo! [Where do I sign, that’s the job for me, or are these agencies selective basket cases – incompetent relatives, banjo players and those owed favours only need apply?] read full story / add a comment

This time its an German production thats at risk. Whos for supporting the right to stage Mozart productions? You dont get any Christians rioting when Salome is staged and John the Baptists head is on display. This production is non-discriminatory: it uses the severed heads not only of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon, but also of Mohammed, Jesus and Buddha. In another vainglorious attempt to misuse electronics to exclude, the newly-erected Tánaiste intends to make it an offence of the State to be a non-EU national without good reason to be in Ireland. Non-EU nationals, including one might assume North Americans, New Zealanders and those sexy Brazilian dancers - you know, good migrants? - will be asked to prove that they have good reason to be shopping in Carroll's O'Connell Bridge.
