Most normal people tend to take a position on something like the War based on their unspoken values or prejudices, then try to rationalise that position post-facto. Most normal people, unfortunately, also take rational criticism of such a position as a direct attack on their egos. And in fairness, most normal people also get a kick out of insulting their opponents, especially in an anonymous forum such as this (mea culpa). This article is not meant to start a pissing contest between pro- and ant-war people; I would genuinely like these topics argued about intelligently and honestly by all. read full story / add a comment

Earlier this year we saw some airlines leave Shannon following some spectacular direct action. “Good, Law-abiding” ‘ordinary’ airlines like World, North American and Miami Air. Just the folks you want to move your troops, DU and high grade explaosives. At the time we had Aer Rianta and some of the Chamber of Commerce lamenting their departure as tragic.Well- Good news ! De Valera came back from the grave in Galway on Easter Sunday to voice his support for Irish neutrality at a “counter- Fianna Fail Easter Commemoration” in Galway’s Eyre Square. The organisers, the Galway Alliance Against War, had the actor Brendan Murray, formerly of Ros na Run, to play the part of Dev, while an original soundtrack of one of de Valera’s pro-neutrality speeches was played over loud speaking equipment. read full story / add a comment

IRELAND, the only country in Europe which still bans nude bathing, is facing a mass campaign by naturists for a change in the law. The Irish tourist board has been bombarded with e-mails from hundreds of nudists from Ireland and across the continent urging them to help establish a beach for those in search of an all-body tan. The Irish Naturist Association, which is leading the campaign, claimed it was being backed by four priests who are members. read full story / add a comment

As an Egyptian Jewish refugee, I celebrate Passover with special meaning. Passover is a time to commemorate the Jews' liberation from slavery in Egypt in 1300 BCE and return to freedom in Israel. At my family Seders in Cairo in the 1940s, we felt as if we represented the enduring memory of that exodus. Little did we know that we would soon experience our own exodus from Egypt as a result of racism and oppression. On Passover it is a Jewish tradition that, in retelling the exodus story, we should feel as if we ourselves experienced persecution and exodus from Egypt. I hope that this year we can also take a moment to experience the modern exodus of Middle Eastern Jews, one million of whom fled their homes in Arab countries and Iran between 1940 and 1980 under duress. read full story / add a comment

Karen is here and we're drinking copious amounts of proper coffee and looking at greenery (both novelties after the Limerick prison experience). She came out of prison yesterday (Good Friday) and I thank her for her lengthy witness. I also thank Tim, Laurence, Conor, Katherine, Joe, who have done incredible prison support day-in-day-out, throughout our stay, and who remained steadfast to Karen in her continuing witness. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY KAREN! Have a great bithday and a great first full day of freedom. - Deirdre. read full story / add a comment

Members of the UDA launched an attack on nationalist homes on the North Belfast interface of Limestone Road. At 10pm on Friday night, 19th April, a crowd of loyalists threw bottles, bricks and at least three pipebombs. No injuries were recorded. The Limestone Road is one of a number of interfaces which for two years, bore the brunt of UDA violence. Since September of this year the interfaces have been relatively quiet. Many commentators attributed this to the fued within Loyalism. Fears are now mounting that with the Loyal Orders marching season approaching, loyalist violence at Belfasts interfaces may return. read full story / add a comment
