"Republican Sinn Féin refutes in the strongest possible terms the attempt by the 26 County Justice Minister, Michael Mc Dowell to take our good name by attempting to associate our organisation with criminal activity, in a report carried on RTÉ radio's 'News At One' programme, today (Tuesday Dec 9). The only activity engaged in by Republican Sinn Féin and its members is legitimate political activity, as we have done for almost the past 100 years, the centenary of our foundation is in 2005." read full story / add a comment

"This is crossing the Rubicon, after which there will be no more sovereign
states in Europe with fully-fledged governments and parliaments which
represent legitimate interests of their citizens, but only one State will
remain. Basic things will be decided by a remote 'federal government' in
Brussels and, for example, Czech citizens will be only a tiny particle
whose voice and influence will be almost zero. ; We are against a European
superstate."

national / anti-war / imperialism / news report Monday December 08, 2003 18:22 by Fintan Lane   text 2 comments (last - monday december 15, 2003 00:20)
I need to give some background to why this letter is dated. Fintan wrote and sent this letter out to me on December 2nd, to be put out before the blockade. It arrived in my letterbox today, December 8th. Other letters he has sent have arrived within 24 hours of sending. The prison censors must have made a conscious, politically motivated decision to delay the sending of this one, as it encourages people to attend December 6th and make it a success. I doubt that the delay is the fault of An Post, given the speed with which Fintan's other letters have been delivered. We know the blockade was indeed a success, but I thought it appropriate to post this letter up verbatim regardless, because we wouldn't want to buy into attempts to silence an anti-war prisoner. Instead, let's use this as fuel to spark the planning of the next blockade.

Was chatting to a member of Ográ Sinn Féin over the weekend and I brought up the Coca-Cola boycott issue with him and some of the problems I had with the party’s stance on the issue.

He told me that the party had not had a policy stance on the matter when the referendum took place in UCD and so members were relatively free to take what stance they wished. He went on to claim that this was no longer the case and that at an Ard Comhairle meeting last week the Ard Comhairle had overwhelmingly voted to adopt a position of supporting the boycott campaign.

I expressed surprise at this making the point that there had been nothing in the media about it and no statements from the party on it. He could offer no explanation for this but he was very sure that the decision was taken.

So basically, I am looking to see if anyone else has heard the same thing and what effect does this have on those members of the party’s Ard Comhairle who openly opposed the boycott campaign? read full story / add a comment

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the death of this significant writer in the Irish language.

Probably because his depiction in Albert Power's Eyre Square statue, O Conaire has a folksy image nowadays, but he was a substantial character in his time

O Conaire was a trade unionist, a member of IRB and of IRA, and a founder of Galway Labour Party. He also wrote in defence of the Russian revolution, but evidently became disenchanted withe the Soviet state, for he described himself in later years as an anarchist and as a Trotskyist.

Friday's event will be held in the Conradh na Gaeilge building in Dominick Street, starting at 8. Contributors include actor, Diarmaid de Faoite: poet Rita Ann Higgins (O Conaire's successor as laureate of the dispossessed); and historians Aindrias O Cathasaigh and John Cunningham.

(Admission free; all welcome (Even if you don't know Irish, you'll understand half of the proceedings) read full story / add a comment
