When the state confined whole populations to their homes and bossed us around for years during Covid, where were the philosophers who say they love liberty? Cheering on the authoritarians, says Prof James Alexander.

The revelations never seem to stop. A private dump near Enniskerry operated for years outside of its planning permission and is now found to be polluting the ground water. The county council itself may have been using an illegal dump in a quarry near Blessington. Hospital waste is found illegally dumped in several locations in west Wicklow and there may be as many as two hundred illegal dumps in the county. read full story / add a comment

Last night, Tuesday February 26th, Henry Kissinger's official dinner in UCC was interrupted by the sounds of protesters chanting, singing and naming him a war criminal. Today protesters that included staff, students and peace activists came face to face with Mr Kissinger. Our anger was real and our expression of it was powerfully effective. If the business people of Cork wish to celebrate Kissinger, they realise now that UCC is not the forum. Congratulations to all who were there. read full story / add a comment

As he ran a gauntlet of over 200 protesters this morning Henry Kissinger elder statesman, Nobel Peace prize winner and suspected war crimainal, also ran a gamut of emotions and expressions. He went from defiant, getting out of his chauffeur driven limo as a group of around 100 protesters ran to greet him, through appearing dazed and confused by the barrage of noise and bodies which enveloped him and on to cowering and asking 'how could this happen?' as a further group of 120 students awaited him inside the building where he is giving a keynote speech on expanding the irish economy to a group of senior Irish business and political figures. He has still to leave....... read full story / add a comment

For the proposed post-Taliban 'broad-based' government, the US and Pakistan have engaged an assortment of ex-royalists, spiritual leaders, mujahideen commanders, fundamentalists and the odd nationalist. But the Afghan communists, who ruled Kabul from 1978 to 1992, and who are probably the only ones with any real administrative experience, have been overlooked. read full story / add a comment
